I cared for my grandpa the last year of his life. He had dementia, Macular Degeneration, etc. I was giving him a bath one day, and he barks, "I can't believe a grandson would let all of these kids in the bathroom when he's giving his grandpa a shower."
I kept scrubin' and rinsin', and I said, "Grandpa, there's nobody in here with us!"
He pointed ... he pointed out to thin air ... and he said, "What about that little girl there with the straw hat?"
In the 1920's, he taught in a one-room Lutheran School on the plains in Nebraska. I figured that that little girl was a student of his from long ago. I figured that student must have passed on ...
And was only in that bathroom to help him along to the other side.
It wasn't hard for me to take care of my grandpa. I spent much of my day tokin' away while he watered the hedge or listened to the radio or ...
I sure wish I would of had the courage to share some of my medications with my grandpa. I could of at least buttered his toast with it ... or put it in his Postum. I never had the courage.
Still, I'm at ...
Peace.
Big hugs.
Big hugs.
more realistic
More realistically, it might be too late for many to prevent alzheimer's.
What really bothered me was the hard drugs we used on the confused patients in the hospital - Ativan and or halodol - high doses just knock you out for 24 hours, no memory.
I saw some patients, they were called the 'happy demented' - they were polite but confused. They suffer much anxiety, like a child. Instead of knocking them out to 'make them stay in bed or in their rooms' - we should try THC capsules or suppositories.
There has to be a better way to treat our esteemed elders - they deserve more respect than to be tied in up a posey and wrist restraints - and then doped up because they yell.
Dementia is history being lost, a person has lost everything they ever experienced in life, their loved ones. Even worst is the toll it takes on the loved ones still there for them, - after sundown - every night - they have to lose their loved one all over again...
It is so sad, they deserve better. MM could be their answer.
I sent this to my family as
I sent this to my family as soon as it came out a year or so ago in the news because its a HUGE deal to us. Both of my paternal grandparents died while stricken with Alzheimer's Dis-ease and if I can prevent it in one of my loved ones or prevent it in myself - full steam ahead!
Thanks for sharing this!!
