Good Example of how this kind of 'data' gets spread ...
Round & round & round goes pretty much the same stuff - how do we know where it came from, if info is any good, all that jazz ... we're on it, and so are people in California and elsewhere, but this one is a BIG problem that is going to take a long, long time to get straight.
Sometimes these things are totally contradictory, and I have found a great deal of this stuff is often more related to Stoners than medical users = more description of the Bud than the Effect.
But its got me into a couple good off-line discussions already - keep it coming.

It's SIMPLE
Go to DR cronics.com I've ordered for yrs its FOOL proof!,
They explain all types there .You wont be sorry!
since its hard to find specific strains......
Might be easier to have a more general look at things then work to find a few strains that meet the description and then after sampling each pick the ones that work best for YOU.
Strong Indica

This has to be..
a better post. I just found it when i googling strains LOL
THANKS-----I POSTED THAT LST----DID YOU JUST COPY IT-
LMAO-----DID YOU COPY AND PAISTE THAT FROM MY POST--

No
i found it on some website last night
I don't know. Patients are
I don't know. Patients are free to share among themselves. Sounds pretty right to me. Swap meets have been mentioned. Post meeting get togethers are great for getting other strains to try. The stuff can be freely passed. When and where? Just name it.
without
having any medical cannabis dispensaries here in Michigan it would be almost, if not impossible, for any one patient to sample any strains to see what would work best for their aliment!
I agree
That would make it much easier to try and see what may work for your particular ailment...HJ
What is the lineage?
Of this "Lake Effect" strain. I am interested in seeing some pics of it. Hopefully it works wonders for people, but on a serious note I have some skepticism every time I hear someone come out with a named strain that has supposedly been around since the 70's,and yet I have never heard of it. Most times it is more than likely an already well known strain that has been seeded. Then just simply renamed.
Don't get your panties in a bunch either, I have done basically the same thing myself with the Scud. Although that is a one off clone only cut.
Also I would not take these strain effect lists as gospel. Much depends on the flowering time, and many of these strains have multiple breeders using completely different genetics. For instance there are many White widows, both indica, and sativa. This is true with many of the strains on that list. Sampling of strains is the only real way you will find the right strain for you. These list might help a little though.
Just to add to the general
Just to add to the general consensus, the scientist in me is skeptical of these lists without clinical study. I know there are plenty of studies that back up MMJ ad-nauseum (no pun intended). And I know these lists usually come from personal stories of sincere people. But, I am talking about a reputable, clinical study that links specific genome/phenome types with specific symptoms of specific diseases. Or, maybe Mythbusters could do a show related to marijuana myths?
LAKE EFFECT - Patient Reports Wanted
I TOLD you there were wondrous, mysterious things already happening in Michigan!
Who knows what strains lurk in the heart of the Great Lakes country ?
First there was Free Leonard, now Lake Effect ...
LAKE EFFECT's Developer will be quite pleased to hear your comments which I will soon pass along privately. This indeed is a Michigan strain with both an interesting history and promising future. As I understand it, it came to the Developer long ago - late 70's - and is from an old and well-cultivated sativa. It has since been acclimated to Michigan and is quite stable, a high yielder that (without describing it further) strikes me as an outstanding departure point for developing new, Michigander strains.
Having said that much, please read on - this is a great opportunity to contribute in a meaningful way without spending any $$$ !
--
PATIENT REPORTS - Anyone out there using Lake Effect, please post here or forward to me PRIVATELY with your medical LE experience : we need to know condition, dose (how much did you use), means of ingestion (pipe, vaporizer, brownie, oil) outcome (did it work? how well? how long did it take / last ?), and any subjective comments you care to make about taste, smokeability, qualities ... the Developer is VERY INTERESTED.
This is the perfect strain to start collecting comprehensive patient reports on because we can do it through its entire developmental stream, testing its crosses, seeing what works best ... come on all you LE users, you have to help us out here !
So am I.

This is a field that needs
This is a field that needs serious lab work done.
I am touching into this area with my Blog series( new one up tomorrow). Breaking it down into all the cannabinoids and so on. I wish we could get some funding. Heck, 4 trillion+ federal budget, ya would think we could get ..... $20..... but NoOoooo. Heheh.
We just need to get Cannabis off of schedule 1. The best way to get it off schedule 1 is to do research to prove it has medical benefits. I feel a circular problem coming on.
It's a nice list. But it has very minimal scientific evidence to back it up. At minimum we would need to do a blind study. *sigh*
Maybe someday.
Great post and look forward
Great post and look forward to more research on this subject.I've found some strains just to hard on me head to use being cant get off the couch after coughing me lungs out. Some just make me feel better without the couch lock.Never had the chance to try diffrent strains being I could only try what I could find and that wasn't much.I did just try a strain from here called lake effect and that was some of the smoothest stuff I think I ever used.Very easy on the head and lungs and didn't leave me droolin on the couch for hours. Will have to try more of this strain and find out what it is.Worked great for me shoulder pains and depression.Have ta do more research on this strain grown here in Michigan.
As far as the govt doing research think the only thing they've done is kill monkeys to show smoking will kill ya.Yeah,if I hooked the gas mask up to my cars tailpipe and duct taped the mask on my head and sucked in fumes untill I died, guess they could say thats bad for ya.Be about the same thing they did to the monkeys.
Federal Cannabis Research = Killing Monkies
Don't laugh, that's a great description. I remember one study in which they did just what you described - strapped rhesus monkeys in plastic cases (manufactured in Lansing - displayed them in airport lobby), put masks on their faces, and basically pumped about a bale's worth of smoke into them daily for hours on end. Couldn't kill 'em, so they OD'd em with a phenobarbiturate (sp?), sawed the tops of their heads off, sectioned their brains to look for cell abnormalities, whatever that means. Found em, too, not surprisingly and therefore cannabis causes brain damage.
I'm not kidding - that was a real, federally-funded study of mid-70s, as I recall, that ran about $400k, and when $400k was Real Money. Used to spend hours poring over catalogs of federal research grants wondering how so much money could be thrown at such useless projects - but not for long. They weren't throwing money at Bad Science, it was at the WAR ON drUgS.
No, study wasn't publishable because it wasn't good-enough science, but that didn't prevent NIDA from touting it - without ever producing it for review.
Bob Randall FOI'ed the agency and the Prime Investigator so we finally pried it out of the desk drawer where it had been locked away and finally had real bullets to fire back. That 'study' just sort of faded away ... not totally, it still gets trotted out, but doesn't carry any heft within the scientific literature - the Idiots of the Press for for it, as do certain so-called 'public servants' who don't recognize the rule of Law any better than they can distinguish good science from bad.
But we don't hear much about that sort of 'science' these days for good & substantial reason.
Nonetheless, this kind of dreck is the basis for the WAR ON drUgS ...

Regarding Strains & Pains
This is an issue I've paid a lot of attention to for many years -- and it is a difficult one to deal with intelligently because federal law essentially bans cannabis in research.
Yes, there is plenty of research on cannabis - most of it done somewhere other than the US; what research is done here MUST be approved by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, which has more than once devoted its research dollars more to propaganda than to science -- that was quite so during the Reagan Administration and I haven't seen a whole lot of improvement since.
Before the Revolution, all cannabis research had to be approved by federal agencies, including the DEA who inspected the labs or offices in which it was studied. Not only did the government have to give you permission to conduct research - and if they didn't like the question you were asking, they wouldn't approve) -- and you had to use their cannabis, the 2% garbage NIDA has grown at the Research Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Oxford, Mississippi (home of William Faulkner, alas an alcoholic).
Enactment of state medical cannabis laws alter the picture in ways I'm willing to explain, but it takes a while and can't do it all at once ... and some ways, I gotta tell you, are still 'state secrets ' ... not meaning the state keeps secrets from us, but that there are things to do and ways to do them that the state of Michigan has yet to understand ... when they are ready, which isn't as yet the case judging from the Rules they recently proposed and hat batted back into the third row, we'll show them.
But anyone wondering about my low opinion of NIDA may watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ToCqsozNpFM&feature=channel_page and download this PDF file about our first Michigan medical cannabis program http://www.minorml.org/R.D.Affidavit.pdf ... for those with less time on their hands, both the video and the affidavit describe what NIDA did to Michigan cancer patients in 1980. I think they were trying to kill one and blame it on the medical cannabis program, I really do - they sent us cannabis they judged "unfit for therapeutic use" not a week before they sent it to our Public Health Department to dispense to cancer patients.
Were they trying to kill one so they could blame our medical cannabis program? What do you think ...
They tried and we beat them like a rented mule ...
And its not just NIDA. I was also in the room when an FDA administrator told a Lansing legislative staff person "compassion is not in our dictionary!"
The federal government does not want cannabis recognized as medicine - at least until the present Administration, which I think will indeed make the necessary Change we have been promised ...
The history of cannabis in research is of government suppression, repression, and prior restraint. It's shameful, and anyone concerned with the Bush Administration's shoddy treatment of science in policy ought to have flames belching from their ears when they come to understand the prior restraints imposed on cannabis research in America, Home of the so-called Free (except cannabis researchers, etc.).
Which leads us back to this problem : until recently, we really don't know the chemical constituencies and 'signatures' of any particular strain, or even if the genetics of the so-called strain are stable, producing the same chemicals signatures over the life of the plant.
When I entered the California medical cannabis system I was handed a sheet like this, of strains information. My physician printed it off the California NORML web page, handed itto me, and professed ignorance. She knew she couldn't recommend a strain - was this information any good? How do we know what we think we 'know' ?
It's a tough question and there are people working on it, even here in Michigan (o yes they
are!) ... what, exactly, is in these plants, and what is their effect on the patients who use them?
And we don't have systemic collection of patient reports regarding their use and success (or lack of it) ... we are working on that one, but its a touchy issue because it involves anonymous reporting, among other issues ... but we're on it, and I'll talk to anyone who can help us do this efficiently & effectively.
Everywhere I went, I got recommendations for indicas for my pain issues (which are not neural in origin but come from damaged, degenerating joints and attendant problems of osteoarthritis, bone spurs, all that neat stuff - I've got bone issues, and my surgeon is an osteopath). My best medicines have proven to be old, largely sativas and their hybrids, the active buzzy laughing-gas stuff = there is generally a good flow of Trainwreck through my favorite farmacy (Sacred Mountain, Santa Barbara) grown up in the hills above Goleta by a feminist grower's co-operative (thanks, ladies, you make my day!). It proved to be most cost-effective too as it was very reasonably priced (an 8th of bus was maybe $40 or close to $10/gram, not far off the basic price for shake or leaf, and it is generally discounted some for larger orders)..
I've used a lot of recommended indicas with less success, which isn't to say they don't work - but I pay more for some of them and they don't do it as well;as the sativas which allow me to work -- hell, they probably ALLOW me to work. I don't know if this is idiosyncratic - just me - or if a lot of people have just missed out on sativas for pain
But back to Strains & Pains ... lists like this are a good departure point. Pick strains that look promising and start asking questions. Some of this is going to prove true and useable; some of it is just going to be marketing BS or a cut&paste from somebody else's unverified data (you'll see the same information in many different places, please note - doesn't make it so, just means its easy to find).
I'm personally interested in developing a particular type of plant - several, actually - and have begun doing the same thing, picking strains and asking people I know about them, privately. Time to start taking these talks to the Forum, I guess ...
There are some people who know a lot about cannabis chemistry in the MMMA, I've discovered. We need to hear from them, too, about what it is in these plants theat make them do what they do.
Back shortly ...
