K.I.S.S.
Keep it simple stupid.
Don't let yourself get all confused by the million people telling you a million different ways to do something with this or that or the other while you should be doing this that way or wtvr. Step back and realize it is all a headache of crap.
Make this as easy on yourself as possible.
A simple overview of the basics you will need.
Needed:
1 400W Metal Halide
1 1000w High Pressure Sodium
Couple bales of Pro-Mix, Fafard growing mix, Sunshine Mix.(feed stores, home depot, Greenhouses)
Bag of Perlite(optional)
Box of Blood Meal(wal mart)
Box of Bone meal(walmart)
Box of Kelp Meal(local,online)
Bag of Epsom Salt(standard)
Bag of Dolomite Lime(feed store)
Bag of Worm Castings(local,online)
Soluble Seawed extract(optional)
Mychorrizal Fungi-Plant Success(optional)
Rare Earth(optional)
1 can of Guinness beer(optional to drink or use in mix)
9- 5 gallon buckets(flowering plant pots)
6- 2 gallon buckets(vegetative plant pots)
Sleeve of plastic beer cups(cloning)
rooting hormone(powder,gel;walmart/online)
2 fans
That should do it for a basic grow. it would cost about 6-700 bucks i am guessing. Possibly cheaper depending on Lights.
For seeds: soak seeds for 24 hours in a beer cup to soften shells.
Place seed in beer cup of pure pro mix. Sprout.
Mix potting soil.
Basic recipe: Full bale(3.8 cuft) Pro mix is 2.0 cuft sometimes. Adjust accordingly.
6 cups Bone Meal
4 cups Blood Meal
4 cups kelp meal
3 cups Dolomite Lime
1 1/2 cups Epsom salt
1 small bag Worm Castings
1 bag Perlite(optional)
6 tbsp. Plant Success Granular(optional)
3 tbsp Soluble Seaweed extract(optional)
3 tbsp Rare Earth(optional)
1 can of guinness beer(drink or add to soil)
Now, for ease, mix a half bale at a time. Get the nice 50 gallon contractor black garbage bags. Add all ingredients into bag. Tie closed and roll and roll and mix well. Open bag. Wet down soil well.
Same goes for flowering pots when needed.
All you have to do is water and all your work is done. You 'can' PH your water to 7.0 neutral, but isn't a must.
Water. Watch grow. Repot. Done.
Keep it Simple Stupid.
Of course there are a couple other things to know, but that is a basic setup that can harvest 1 plant a week at 1-4 oz a piece depending.

It is like cooking a 2 minute egg but you are cooking an 8 week plant. This is my recipe on how to cook your 8 week plant. :)
This is a basic mix. Some strains; they are all different; may need a little boost of a Nitrogen fertilizer( i recommend bat guano) once or twice during growth because they wants it, and maybe need a little Phosphorous boost( i recommend bat guano) once or twice at the start of flowering. Thats it.
Also, If your growing the same strain, you can 'tune' in the mix to that strain by maybe adding a little more/less of certain ingredients.
Like i said, this is a straight forward BASIC mix. Theres all sorts of little tweaks, alterations and adjustments that can be done. But i wholly recommend this method for beginners. :)

Also, I have a 400W MH and 1000W HPS listed.
Those can be adjusted down to your lighting needs for what ya plan to do. I assume MOST people will not be using 2 Oz's a week, and can utilize smallewr lights. Everything works the same way though. Smaller pots may be needed.
Generally, you can figure for your veg room and flower room, you need about 1/3 the wattage in your Veg room as to the flower room.
Such as:
150W MH- veg
400W HPS- flower
or something in that range. :-)

The Soluble seaweed extract is something nice to have. It covers those few micronutrients that commonly get overlooked. Here is a link to what i refer to. Prolly find it cheaper somewhere else, just happened to be the first store i hit on google search.

Almost forgot about the Plant success granular. It works nicely. Only really need to use a little of this by simply sprinkling a little bit in the hole when ya repot. It needs roots to survive and it propagates itself. No need to 'really' mix it in your basic mix. You can stretch a can a long way that way. It does improve root health and allow easier uptake of flowering nutrients. Helps the roots really get all "fan like" if ya know what i mean.

Also one i hadn't added to the basic list is "Rare Earth". You can notice the difference in stalk strength and 'coating' to help reduce stress. Silicon is a highly overlooked nutrient.

Growing within the Law
12 plants. total.
At best i see you can have:
8 plants in flower
1 mother plant
3 rooted clones
That's it.
Harvest 1 plant a week on a 8 week cycle.
Take 2 clones a week. Keep only one after it has rooted(7 days)
and ya have a, 3 week vegetative/ 8 week flower system going.
Best way i can see to stay within the law and produce enough medication.
I would say for most people ,with a bit of experience, this would yield 2 oz a week. Advanced guys could get 3+ 'maybe so' due to only 3 week vegetation cycle.
But i expect in this system you want to harvest exactly 2.5 oz a week.
But then you have the dry/cure issue.
1 week to dry, 1 week to cure is about the minimum i can see being used. This causes problems as you will have effectively 2 harvested plants at the same time overlapping causing you to have more then the allowed 2.5 oz. If that is the case you may have to drop to 7 plants in flowering on an 8 day schedule. Which allows you a tiny bit of extra time for vegetative plants.

And there ya go. I wanted to put these in my Blog so i can easily reference people. :-)

A new add on....
I have recieved a few requests about smaller amounts for mixing soil and so on ... just thought i would add this... Another recipe that can be used.
One thing i remind people, a bale is Compressed and many people buy "loose" bags that are smaller. Such as, a compressed bale(in my recipe) is 3.8 cu/ft. Pro mix has smaller bags of loose soil like 1 cu/ft "Loose". The difference between "loose" and compressed is a 2:1 ratio. 1 cu/ft compressed= 2 cu/ft loose.
Here is a nice recipe for the 1 cu/ft loose bags
1- 1 cu/ft bag of Pro Mix "loose"
3/4c - Bone Meal
1/2c - Blood Meal
1/2c - Kelp Meal
3/8c or 6 TBSP. - Dolomite Lime
2 1/2 TBSP. - Epsom Salt
2 TBSP. - Jamaican Bat Guano
2 TBSP.- Crab Meal
1 TBSP - Plant Success
2 Teaspoons - Rare Earth
1/2 teaspoon - Soluble Seaweed Extract
Big Handful Worm Castings.
The K I S S System is a Great way to start.
Great Info
Dazmn malamute ...u should nwrite a book...
Or you could have just told everyone to just use the FoxFarm system from soil to ferts...LOL......thats what I use it has everything in it from Happy frog to ocean forest to starter mix to the Red bag with the worm castings in it....then the ferts....by Foxfarm.
I also use this stuff called Roots by Aurora...not bad....My Bubba Kush is all gone and people really liked it using the above system.
On Deck is BC Roadkill and Querkle then Genius, folowed by single feminized seed sof Soma's Lavender and CH9..the CH9 I think is by DNA in CALI...??
The Bubba Kus wasn killer smoth smoke though...might get it again because it is so cheap....35.00 for ten pack.
Well... i do say Fox Farm is
Well... i do say Fox Farm is okie dokie fine before there... but The fox farm system will cost you about 2-3 times as much and well, read my previous post about why i think people should mix their own... heheheh...

I hear ya Bro about Foxfa..but by the time you try to go cheaper
it can take longer and possibly more trips..Yes FoxFarm is a bit more expensive..but it all is factored into the cost of doing business.
Until I have my own Hydro shop I will have to pay market...j/king about the hydro store...but that would be a sweet job. talk to stoners all day....
U did go into detail about the processes though.
How you been Malamute..? I have been awal for awhile. My two patients been keeping me busy. Looking to take on more now that I have a small system in place. having 5 full time patients has got to be a real challenge staying fully stocked up...I keep going out , but think it's good now with planty of genetics in the hopper. I like variety versus taking continual cuttings. I just suck at cloning....that's my weakness....grr

Very Good post its now on my fav's list Thanks
Hey Howdy Danielshemp, I
Hey Howdy Danielshemp,
I have heard good things about BC Bottled Salt fertilizers.
As far as "leaching" peat to get rid of acids, you can't really do so. Peat is naturally about 3.7-4.5 on the ph scale. Most peat is pre mixed with some lime to bring it up to 5.0-6.5 depending on what peat and mix you buy. So by soaking it and leaching it, you would basically be leaching out any lime that was added to keep it from being so acidic. :-) Now soaking it in high ph water will give the illusion of a less acidic ph, but the peat itself is still acidic as heck and will return to heavy acidity promptly unless a balancer is added.(Lime most commonly)
Peat moss
I have had excellent results. Preparation is important. Allow the peat to soak for a couple days then drain. This leaches the acid from the peat. My nutes are bc grow, bc boost, bc bloom and root 66. I mix the nutes with water in 1 gallon jugs. Each plant gets about 1/2 gallon of the mix every day.
Peat is inexpensive .2 cubic feet will fill appoximately 6, 2 gallon pots for about 3 dollars.

I added a link to another Retail Locator for Fafard Growing Mix Bales.
I recommend staying away from any of their "mixes" that have bark and/mulch in it, but their baled growing mixes are the same as Promix/Sunshine etc.

Learning to grow it
Thanks for all the input. I am just starting out! I thought maybe a utility florescent light hanging at an angle could control the growth stage but they just tried harder to reach it. So I now have it even across. I have my starters outside in 12 inch pots so that they are used to the outside and I can move them inside at night for more light. So far it's working out ok. As for setting the sequence to grow pot on a regular amount is my next challenge. I have sexed one Female so far! Yeah! I was worried after reading someone had 12 males. I used Miracle Grow potting soil and Miracle Grow Organic for my plants. Then I mix Miracle Grow Fertilizer, The blue stuff! Any cheap advice is welcome. I am such an old hippie that has forgotten the basics! Been over 20 years since I smoked. Sure beats Ultram and other junk. Forgot to tell you I used wolf manure also and chicken droppings. All courtesy of my 8 wolves and 14 chickens. Peace
good post
good post very informative.....WUF WUF
Absolutely. There are a
Absolutely.
There are a bunch of very good pre mixed soils to choose from. I have seen several suggestions like Happy frog, Fox Farm Ocean Forest and a few others and what not. :-) They will work just fine. Happy frog has less nutrient in it than the FOx Farm Ocean Forest.
But you can mix your own at half the cost. Just a little back work involved. :-)
Also, it can be difficult to find Fox Farm for many of us.
But just to add to the topic...
Here is a Retail Locator for Fox Farm Soils in Michigan..

And here is the link for ones in Wisconsin for those that live in the Yooper...

I like teaching people to mix their own because it conveys and encourages basic understanding of the growing process. Once people start using the mix, they start asking "why" am i putting these ingredients into the soil? What do they do? Why do i put this in? Why do my plants like it? And those type of logical progression questions.
When people buy the Fully pre mixed soils, i feel they are just going to accept what's in the bag is what is in the bag. Just as well be a hot dog and wondering what is in it! hahaha.
Teach a man to fish...
But yes. I totally agree that using the various forms of Fox Farms is an easier way than mine even. Fox Farm Ocean forest tends to need a touch of Lime and Perlite added to it. Also i would simply use some bat guano tea for later feretilizers in the process. I have seen many "regiments" assigned to Ocean Forest. I am sure if you go to icmag.com you can find extensive information for it for those that want to research it. :-)
Excellent
post Mal, and the K.I.S.S. technique makes is so much more relaxing! Just to let you know, I always enjoy your postings or blog.
Pretty cool recipe Mal. I
Pretty cool recipe Mal. I like it but to keep it even simpler folks could use fox farm ocean forest soil and get a good blend of those meals already prepared.
I use a soil pretty close to yours. 2 parts soil mix to 1 part perlite. On strains that go over 60 days I add worm castings and more perlite, 1 part perlite to 1 part castings.
So the mix is 2 parts ocean forest, 2 parts perlite, 1 part worm castings. That's pretty simple.
Thanks Malmute
Good read. Great list / recipe. Sure beats grocery shopping.
MALLY,???
I thought this blog was about KISS making a new album or commin to the Soo or somethin.Geez this is second time this week I have been mislead by phoney blog titles...
mix
The only thing that I would add to the mix instructions, is to "grow" your soil for a good 2 weeks if you have the time. It lets the microbes start to break down your nutes into a more usable product for the plants. I also think if using soil of any kind, microbes are not optional. However, you can get pro-mix with bugs already. Little more expensive, but is worth it. Good recipe.

Well i classify myself in the
Well i classify myself in the stupid category and in constant need of " For dummies" manuals myself. No offense indeed. It is said in a self deprecating way. :-)
The Keep it simple stupid origin is just because most people try to make growing cannabis harder than it needs to be. Once you know what you are doing it is as simple as can be. This method takes away the guess work for you to a degree and puts you on a stable footing to procede from.
There are tons of pre mixed soil mixes like Fox Farm Ocean Forest that are perfectly wonderful for those that cannot physically mix their own. For those of the lazy and of means group, a cement mixer is the cats meow....woof!
You can use bottled salt fertiizers or go hydro or whatnot. This is just a Nice Little Reference guide.
I put the "Malamute Seal of Approval" on it.

Dummies
Funny that you mention this. I was helping my mother recently with one of her many computer issues....and there are quite a few. I saw that she had her "Computers and the Internet for Dummies" book out. I looked through it and realized that it was written in 1998. Most of what they told her to do could not be done using the tools in Vista....but she was still trying...and really feeling bad because she could not follow a book for "Dummies".
Great post....the whole "Dummies" phrase is now part of speech, and replaced the old Cliff notes version.
THe paw rocks, I like the
THe paw rocks, I like the approval seal :P hehehe

Malamute, whoever you are ...where ever you are. You are the wise one. That was one of the most informative posts on a simple legal grow that I've ever seen here. I always learn from you and really appreciate your time in sharing that info. Excellent!
May I suggest 2 things that might make it easier for people with kidney probs and lower back issues. For me, all the mixing of all the medium stuff would be a back killer. I used to use SCHULTZ Potting Mix in smaller bags for my wife's flowers and tomatoes and it was great and has no bug larvae in it and retains moisture and aerates well. Well worth the ease for me.
Also, you know, maybe I'm being overly sensitive for all the newbie's out there, but you know that there is a difference between ignorance and stupidity. KISS denotes the latter. "Dummies" adds reinforcement to stupid, in the same post.
Surely your wise enough to know that superiority is not a virtue.
I know how nice and cool you write, i just think maybe you didn't realize that and you help us all a lot, I just thought maybe I should mention that in the spirit of learning for all here. not to single you out - you're the wise one, as I said, and that post was GREAT!

I think hydro is fine and dandy for many.
I just find this a very simple procedure for people to get their feet under them.
Kind of a "How to Grow for dummies" first chapter.
I had posted these previously but they get buried and lost. I figured i best put them together and in my Blog. I know how much ya'll love my infrequent blog postings. :-)

only problem is...
most of the items listed are not needed...

True, if you have a fluorescent, some dirt, and some water, you can have a pretty crappy harvest in about 120 or so days, with airy and depressing buds to boot that wouldnt last a weekend :) hehehe, but I do like this info :) I wish the sun would come out, so much rain and I want the sun!!
You See
I have all those things Except for the lights only had a 150,250 and a 400 watt HPS. But i always had it in mind to do a grow outdoors using the sun. Well as we all know that becomes a very sticky web . But great post thanks simple is best. And the sun make for the best medicine.By the time im done we all be growing in dog kennels. Had all my ducks in a row ,three plants were in full bloom, four were just starting to flower, three were veging and two cutting . Most of it was G13.Leo came along killed them all .Months of work down the tubes
