BAD AXE — His passion for the outdoors and working one-on-one with the public has prompted Bad Axe Police Chief Michael H. Anderson to reevaluate the position he’s held with the city for roughly a year and a half.
On Monday, Anderson approached Bad Axe City Manager Dale A. VanDeVusse and resigned his position as police chief.
“I requested to transfer back to my old job,” said Anderson Wednesday morning. “This is not a discipline action or due to any controversy. I simply hate working days—that’s the bottom line. I worked afternoons for 15 years (for the Bad Axe Police Department). I want to go back.”
Anderson previously was a sergeant working the afternoon shift for the department and also successfully headed up the department’s canine unit.
“I enjoy the work as chief. If I could just do it during the afternoon, it would work for me,” said Anderson, who added the department isn’t large enough to have a chief who works afternoons. “I feel like I need to be outside during the day and interacting with people like I did when I was on a sergeant on afternoons. Right now, my day consists of warm inside or cool inside, and I miss the people I was dealing with on a daily basis. This job consists of a lot of meetings, and I really don’t get to see the public at all. Before becoming chief, my days would were spent outside, hunting and enjoying working with the dogs and with my partners Scott Zaleski and Shawn Webber. I’m really looking forward to getting back to those things.”
Bad Axe city manager Dale A. VanDeVusse said the matter will be discussed further by the Bad Axe City Council’s human resources committee, which includes Jim Hall, Jim Hicks and Richard Peterson, at a later date.
“It has not been approved yet. I only received word about it (Anderson wish to be reassigned) on Monday,” said VanDeVusse. “The committee is going to try to accommodate his wishes (to move back to his former position), at this point the discussion is very preliminary.”
VanDeVusse stressed that Anderson’s request was “not due to anything other than his personal desire.”
Prior to taking on the position as police chief Anderson served the department as an officer, sergeant and briefly as interim chief when former Chief John Bodis retired at the end of 2008. Anderson was then selected by the council members to fill the chief’s position effective Jan. 5, 2009.
