Interesting and inspirational story, assuming it's all true and they aren't leaving out anything relevant. I don't have any direct knowledge, and don't really want to rain on the parade, but Richard Lee does seem to generate a lot of controversy. This thread at icmag has over 500 posts in a week, with lots of heated debate back and forth on Lee and the referendum this fall in California:

This could easily be growers and other people resenting his success, but it's not impossible that he could be trying to just get a better lock on the market for his own operations.
