Medical Marijuana Users Protest Drug's Stigma

Pot Protest Focuses On Treatment By Police

UPDATED: 6:41 pm EDT July 1, 2010

SAGINAW, Mich. -- Dozens of people with medical marijuana licenses were out protesting Thursday, saying they're tired of being targeted and having their homes raided when they're abiding by the law.

Medical marijuana is legal, but protestors in downtown Saginaw don’t think that’s enough.

“Don't you see the people here? This is what this is about, support,” said Steven Rooks. “You hear the horns honking? I mean this is a beautiful thing, it's time for change.”

Rook was joined by about two dozen people protesting their treatment by Saginaw County law enforcement.

“This is the law. Stop arresting patients,” said Rook’s fellow protester John Roberts.

Roberts is with the Tri-Cities Compassion Club, a support group for medical marijuana users. His home was raided and he said users are living in fear.

“We feel like we have to live in tyranny,” said Roberts. “You know 63 percent of the people voted for this law. We're not drug dealers.”

Many of the protesters said there’s a stigma that comes with medical marijuana and they want to change that.

“I think that a lot of this falls on the negative stereotype,” said Rooks.

“Everybody thinks it's against the law. It's not anymore. It is legal now,” said protestor Tonia Miller.

With Thursday’s protest, they’re hoping Saginaw County authorities get the message that they’re not scared anymore.

Thank you just doesn't seem enough anymore

You guys out there on the front are this

communities eyes, ears and voices. With a

burning passion for justice and compassion

for human kind you guys/gals march forward

in this unfortunate battle. With diligence

you (all) come back to give us news articles

and videos keeping us up to date, drawing

us all closer, educating and unifying

an ever growing community of such

diversity within, yet as one in believing

in the healing power of this magnificent

plant.

I was peeved over some of the comments

in the news article posted, fuming really.

Then I came back here, saw the videos,

read your recent post and my mood

instantly changed as my heart swelled

and my eyes watered as I imagined how

you were feeling having your sons

there in support, WOW.

I am so glad you shared that with us

John.

I'm not going to go write a comment

on the news article now, I won't let

those folks agitate me. Did anyone

else notice that the folks bashing the

protesters in the comment section

sure did know an awful lot of

"stoner lingo" to spew in ignorance?

Well...

peace all

John, Your true nature was self evident today. I saw you take up the cause with no regard for you personal safety against a known tyrant. You walked With John, to rescue his fiance from the evil that had sought to intimidate those willing to stand up against the sheriffs absolute power. Their plan failed miserably, because you were willing to go from person to person and ask for money. You stayed to the end to make sure all were safe. You were a hero today, just like everyday I've known you. You are a good shepherd and a keeper of your brethren. Thank you for being a loyal servant of the people. Your Friend, BB

I thank you my friend. Kind words indeed. But you and you wife are heros to me. I know its hard on both of you. Every time I see you guys I am sure you would be in less pain if life were less demanding on you time. But for now we fight on. Rest awaits us when our task is finished.

I'm glad there were a lot of supportive people there, I couldn't make it, live too far away and don't drive, knowing I'd never get a ride so I don't even dare hope or ask, so I just read the messages and know I'm marching there with you all in Spirit. I'm the outsider looking in, I just watch it all go by, nothing I can do about it. I don't come here much anymore, though you're all in my heart. Peace.

Sincerely, Sb
