tooldini
A friend of mine that is doing some electrical work said he has a Sodium light that is 1000w it has a hood and he set it for 110v running. He said he got it from a greenhouse he was doing some electrical work on. He says he will give it too me for free. My question is will this be good is it different than an HPS or did he just not say the High pressure part? One more question is from a chart I have seen it looks like if running for 16 hours a day my electric should only go up from the light about $36.00 we pay .07 Killowatts per hour does this sound correct? +OC Jay
If the ballast is for HPS 1000w then it will run any 1000w HPS bulb.. Just be sure its not a MH, they are more common in greenhouses.
boroboro
$0.07 * 1 * 16 * 30 = $33.60 / month rate * kw * hours * days $0.07 / kw-hr is a pretty low rate, isn't it? I think we're around $0.10 up north here. That ballast should be a good starting point, but don't be sloppy with the wiring from ballast to bulb. There are much higher voltages there, so be sure to use the correct connections and cables. edit: forgot to add in more electric costs -- about 10% for ballast inefficiency (another $4 / month), plus whatever is required for fans, air conditioning, pumps, etc.

A Low Pressure Sodium light is a streetlight. It's not the same as a High Pressure Sodium and it's no good for growing. If it's a HPS, then snag it. tooldini
How would I be able to tell the difference? maybe he will know for sure but I haven't talked to him again yet
Wired4Success
lps will be a yellow light, hps is orange. It's most likely an hps and will work. I'm curious on why your running it 16hrs a day? Flower with this bulb, don't veg with it.
Kingdiamond
He did say it came from a greenhouse correct? Then its probably an industrial grow fixture the kind with the attached ballast they are a beyatch to hang but if you have a lot of head space they work very well. tooldini
Yeah he said it was in a greenhouse and has a hood thing on it. He wired it for 110v he said it could run different volts or something I don't know electriccal very well. I guess when someone was tearing one down or something they gave him 2 of them I think.
