Family Stops Schuette From Exploiting Loved One

Attorney General candidate Bill Schuette said he pulled a political advertisement after the family of a Flint police officer who was killed in the line of duty complained, saying it is inaccurate, disrespectful and prepared without their permission.

 

Owen Fisher was 25 when he was killed in July 2005 after his patrol car collided with another patrol car during a high-speed police chase. The suspect, Christopher Bentoski, was convicted of assault with intent to do great bodily harm and two counts of fleeing a police officer. He served a three-year sentence and was paroled last year, according to the state's Offender Tracking Information System.

 

The Republican AG candidate's campaign mentioned Fisher's death in an ad that aimed to portray Schuette's Democratic opponent, Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton, with a record of plea deals. But it inaccurately states Fisher's death was a murder, said Fisher's parents, David and Vida Fisher of Mount Pleasant.

 

They added Schuette never contacted them before airing the ad, and said they felt that was disrespectful to their son and family.

 

"Our son was a tremendously civil human being and this ad is both uncivil and incorrect," David Fisher said in a statement. "We believe that Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton approached this case with appropriate gravity and treated our family respectfully."

 

Schuette, through his spokesman, Rusty Hills, said Thursday they pulled the ad the day before after speaking with Owen Fisher's brother-in-law.

"We respect the family's wishes," Hills said.

 

The ad was replaced with a new one featuring former Oakland County Prosecutor L. Brooks Patterson, who asserts Leyton does "rampant plea bargaining."

 

This is the second Schuette ad that he's been asked to remove. The Michigan Democratic Party called last week for the removal of one featuring Deb McIntosh, a woman who criticized Leyton's prosecuting record. The Democrats blamed the ad for a death threat that was left for Leyton on his work answering machine.

 

On Wednesday, Shawn Patrick Crouse, 33, of Hazel Park was arrested and arraigned on charges of malicious use of telecommunication services, a misdemeanor with a penalty of six-months in jail and/or $1,000 fine. Crouse told police he left the message after viewing the ad featuring McIntosh, according to Genesee County Undersheriff James Gage. A preliminary exam for Crouse, who was released on personal recognizance, will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Election Day.
