Pulling the heat from the lights and exhausting out and then a separate vent brings fresh air in

Agreed, but as we talked about in chat, you are pulling a vacuum on the light cooling system..

Any blemish in the line will allow smell into the system, UN-filtered..

consider putting the filter on a different fan (on temp/humid control) and intake to the lights from outside and BLOW through them... pressurizing the cooling loop with fresh, smell free air..

Allow the filter and vent fan to pull negative pressure on the room, keeping smells in..

I've got a small 4" fan and DIY filter pulling on my room 24/7 keeping negative pressure on the room... then I have a vent fan hooked to temp/humid control and it pulls cool air when it comes on..
