The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for Macomb County and surrounding areas as a major snowstorm is expected to arrive Tuesday night, bringing heavy accumulations of snow along with gusty winds that will make travel conditions hazardous.

According to the advisory, between 8 and 12 inches of snowfall along with periods of freezing rain is possible as the storm moves through the area overnight Tuesday and into much of Wednesday. In addition, northeast winds will increase to 15 to 25 mph Tuesday evening, creating blowing snow that will reduce visibility.

The heavy amount of snow along with the wind conditions will make it difficult for road crews to effectively clear the streets and highways in a timely fashion, the weather advisory states.

To make matters worse, the storm will be followed by another spell of bitterly cold temperatures. The highs for Thursday and Friday will be in the 20-degree range, with temperatures falling to the low single digits overnight.

For Monday, overcast skies and cooler temperatures are anticipated. The high should reach 21 degrees with winds out of the east-northeast between 5 and 12 mph. There’s an 80 percent chance of snow Monday evening with some accumulation possible.
