Reinvent State Prison System

Recommended Posts

This could tie in to recent opinions stated about the war on drugs.

"When Ithaca Public Schools Superintendent Nathan Bootz satirically asked Gov. Rick Snyder to fold his schools into the state prison system, he pricked a nerve that ought to continue throbbing until Michigan’s budgeting pain is finally cured.

Bootz said in a letter to the editor of the Gratiot County Herald that the new state budget cuts per-student funding to $6,846 per year, while Michigan spends $30,000 or more per year to keep convicted criminals in prison.

Make Ithaca Schools into prisons, so their students could benefit from a more than four-fold funding increase, he argued.

While Bootz drew attention to the disparity in paying for prisoners versus students, we’d like to see the budgeting attention linger upon the Michigan Department of Corrections."
