LANSING — A Michigan lawmaker wants to link welfare benefits to a clean drug test.

Republican Rep. Jeff Farrington of Utica introduced a bill this week calling for drug tests to be used to determine eligibility for the state's Family Independence Program benefits.

Lawmakers in many states have proposed drug tests for recipients of welfare or other government assistance, but Florida this year was the first to enact such a law in more than a decade. It's been held up by a legal challenge.

Farrington noted Wednesday that people applying for private-sector jobs have been subject to drug tests for decades. He says people receiving welfare should face the same standard.

Who pays for the tests - the taxpayers ? So what happens if someone tests positive for recommended MM they end up with no food living on the streets more then likely at a point breaking down maybe even stealing to survive ( or they die ) until we jail them or their hospitalized ? That costs more then the welfare program per individual . What does this solve ? What about their kids do they go into foster care ? The Country needs jobs not hate . The jobs can't be for $4.50 a hour they need to be at a living wage and they have to be closer then ever before to where poeple live because of high energy costs .

Definition of insanity: Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

In Florida, at a cost of hundreds of dollars per test, they discovered that 2% of welfare applicants tested positive for drug use while in the general population 6% test positive. The welfare population uses drugs at a lower rate than the general population. A Florida lawmaker proposed that, in fairness, all individuals receiving government payments should be drug tested. I doubt if that will get far, which serves to highlight why Republican politicians want to hassle welfare recipients: It is part of their general agenda to do away with all government entitlement programs.
