Workers Comp Medical Marijuana Bill Clears Panel

Legislation that would specify that workers' compensation doesn't have to reimburse costs associated with medical marijuana today cleared the Senate Judiciary 4-0 and now moves on to the full Senate.

Under SB 0933, sponsored by Committee Chair Sen. Rick JONES (R-Grand Ledge), employers would "not have to reimburse, or cause to be reimburse, charges for medical marijuana treatment."

Current law requires that employers must furnish or cause to be furnished, reasonable medical, surgical, or hospital services and medicine that is legal under state law. Jones said today that even the medical marijuana community that circulated petitions for medical marijuana admit the law was never intended to require workers compensation insurance coverage.

The law was part of a two-bill package that the Judiciary Committee met on last week (See "Marijuana Proponent Lights Into Jones, Committee," 02/29/12).

In other action, the Judiciary Committee also reported HB 5050 and HB 5051 sponsored by Rep. John WALSH (R-Livonia) that make it illegal to provide false information to a peace officer conducting a criminal investigation.

Focus on the positives and remember how much good the police do . The criminalizing of drug use has dividend society and put police and citizens in a bad spot for what truly can turn into a severe medical problem for many Americans who are afraid to seek help due to criminality at the personal use level . We need affordable non puntive comfortable detoxification and treatment programs that help people continue within their responsabillities without overwhelming them causing failure . Then their are medical patients who need treatment and more supports to maintain comfort and function without negative side effects and injury .

The Judiciary knows that we are being abused. They were told that by everyone that testified. We currently have no civil rights. Not even the right to a fair trial. If they pass these Bills they will be responsible for every single person that is abused because of these new Bills. I am absolutely stunned that people in leadership can hear that sick people are being abused and not do something about it. They seem to think if they pass more laws that it will have a positive effect. They have been informed otherwise. Judges and law enforcement will continue to selectively enforce the provisions that allow them to kick our teeth in and ignore the provisions that protect us. That is not just a violation of the law. It is a sin. There is a special place in hell for those that abuse the sick. There is no justification for doing so. For the state to pass legislation that protects the bullies is just plain disgusting. Se you folks tomorrow. Thanks, bb

It is amazing how they don't even recognize their discrimination and hatred . How about a workmans comp bill that removes the programs abillity to deny benefits based on zero tolerance involving medical cannabis . it has been since Dec 2008 medical cannabis is legal why not cover some of the cost like vaporizers to stop smoking when feasible and the Doctors recommendation at least ! Give us more protections to continuation of care without predjudice . I promise I will be on the phone tomorrow making polite calls if able and listening to the hearing . Thanks to whoever put up the link last time we had it playing on the TV so everyone here could listen . If I had been at Best Buy I would of streamed it there .
