Readers Debate Marijuana After Felony Bust Of Norton Shores Medical-pot Grower

Recommended Posts

Commenters have had plenty to say on a story about a Norton Shores medical-marijuana cardholdercharged with a felony after drug-enforcement police allegedly found nearly twice the allowable number of marijuana plants growing in his home.

Opinions about the bust, marijuana enforcement in general and Michigan's medical-marijuana law in particular varied widely.

Some commenters advocated legalization of marijuana and criticized those who oppose that. Here was commenter MKGirl's take:

unfortunately the type of people who are so opposed to legalizing marijuana are the same narrow minded individuals who do not support gay rights, women's rights, anything progressive whatsoever. its pretty clear this is a generational thing and much to their dismay (and however this situation will play out) the tide is turning- hope you're all ready!

Commenter yardmaven1 supported regulated legalization but criticized home-grow operations:

I totally agree, fully legalize it and treat it like alcohol and tobacco. My only problem is that neither one of those are allowed to be manufactured out of the home and sold. It should be handled by a pharmacy, not mom and pop operations in their basement. ... Profit is why 99% of these people are growing it . ... Moonshine isn't legal and neither should this method of selling something "medically necessary".

Commenter notfoursale1 criticized exploitation of the medical-marijuana law:

I have a hard time believing that everyone that voted for this law did so to give everyone the right to smoke it when ever they wanted. It was suppose to be for people with serious illness and medical problems.

Lets face it when any law like this passes there are going to be doctors with so few ethics that they will sign a card for anyone for any reason and collect their $125 fee for doing so.

What's your opinion? Weigh in here or on the original story.

Ok folks, we are doing a little damage control over this case. I've not posted on MLive but was reviewing what was said prior to saying something. We are discussing this among ourselves, but in public we are looking for a more unified voice. And I come across THIS in the postings, on MLive...

Any Marijuana case NOT GUILTY..This is the only way we can protect each other.. http://clarecountycc.ning.com/events/clare-county-compassion-club-meeting P.S Our club does not recommend NOR do we endorse Dr.bob.

Alert us.

Now let's look at what this posting says to the community. First 'any marijuana case NOT GUILTY'. We don't want to be held accountable to your standards you ignorant, non pot smoking, so called 'normal' people. We hold ourselves above your laws, and we will use the jury system to try and justify any criminal activity we do. We have no sense of responsibility. Nor can we spell or write a complete sentence.

Next there is a plug for Mayor's clinic with Dr. Harwell, a doc that has been the subject of investigative reports for rubber stamping certs. That's fine, if that is what Mayor recommends, it is a free country, but what message is this 'get a cheap signature any way you can' attitude sending to the community?

Finally, he makes an unprovoked personal attack in the media against me. Now what value does anyting I were to say about this story in public after Mayors already come out and questioned my credentials. Mayor has his own vendetta against me, but his use of this story in MLive, where I could have added something to the discussion on the part of the community, is an example of the lack of unity and infighting that will destroy this community and the Act. Thanks mayor, for assisting Bill Schuette's efforts to sow dissent and point out the lack of responsibility and respect all these non-terminal popheads have for the Act and the voters that they mislead.

You know, right now I have a lot on my plate. I've got a practice to run, a couple of new websites to work on, and just got off a major trip to the UP. We are setting up a pain clinic in Marquette next week. I'm tired. To top that off, my daughter was bit by what is more than likely a rabid bat (we get the test results today) and is already several days into a very painful series of shots. I think I am going to take a little vacation from all this and deal with these important personal issues.

Most compassion club leaders I've met are thoughtful, educated, competent spokespeople for the community that put all of us in a good light. It is unfortunate a club actually has a loose cannon like this as a leader, it does not reflect well on the club or the community. Rather than see mayor put on vacation, I think I am going to go on one myself, and take some time to deal with the private issues I have before me now. While I am gone, I think we all need to take a hard look at the image we present to the community, and those that speak for us. I'll let mayor go around and tell everyone how he 'shut me down' so I didn't post for awhile.

why don't you two grow up, Mayor and you too Dr. Bob,, you seem to feed it as much as mayor does.. If one of you would just shut up the other would have nothing to say, Both of you are acting irresponsibly,, get over it,, and lets move on.

I believe the same people are also opposed to medical marijuana. And they happen to be the ones who will vote for Romney. Maybe we should ALL stand united under the CHOICE flag? Gay rights and women's rights are big winners. We need to all get together and blast the right wing controllers... all the way to November.

This is a great post. Unify and join causes. Show it is a civil rights issue, not just a marijuana issue.

It really is a choice issue. We just want to choose our own medicine, simple as that. It's not that much different than the other choice issues when it comes right down to it. And looky who is always opposed to choice, those who want smaller government, supposedly. They bash Obamacare because it is too controlling of their health care, supposedly. Then they want to micro manage ours. We need to use their moves and stances against them like you do in martial arts. They are way out there and you just need to apply a little pressure in the right spot and they fall over.

Obamacare..hmmm Resto I don't want to get into a debate on obama so I won't write out a long reply on the obama issue but take obamacare alone,it is is 1700 pages of regulations. We have more new government regulations since he took office than ever before in history..4 more years of Obama..be careful what you wish for!!

Thanks, the shots are painful but she is taking it like a trooper. She was sleeping when she was attacked. Completely unprovoked. Mom, who won't kill a spider, chased it down and got it. We'll know the results of the test today.

You fell right into my martial arts trap, you did. How can you be against Obamacare AND not be for choice? And how can you be for choice and not be for women's rights, gay rights, and wait for it..... the right to choose your own medicine. BOOM it fits and it will work. We want the right to choose, just like all the other repressed groups out there. We all belong under the same tent. The CHOICE tent. It's a really big tent.... And we already know Mitt hates medical marijuana. We have solid proof of that. So it all fits like a glove. Wear the glove right on through until November.

I'll side with Dr. Bob on this.

I like how Jim used the word "phaqtoad" - that's an instant classic :jig: and kind of describes those like him over at 3MG who hide in their mommy's basement all day

I can't even believe there's any Romney supporters involved with medical cannabis at this point.

First, we post the video where Romney tells the dying medical cannabis patient he doesn't believe in what has been keeping him alive. He actually smirks and walks away.

Then, that is countered by saying,"Romney has been self educating himself about the good things about medical cannabis".

Then, AFTER this 'self-education' he comes out and says, again, "I don't believe in Medical marijuana".

I guess he learned all he needed to and is ready to kill it. We should have learned all we needed to here. There is no debate about it, Romney is anti medical cannabis and says so any chance he gets. This is a medical cannabis web site, first and foremost. There is no place for Romney here, or in our lives in 2013. He's firmly on the other side of the fat black line. He picked his spot and must get to enjoy it to the fullest, so pile on folks, he deserves it. We need to be united for our own personal choices.

Well said! :goodjob: :goodjob:

I also find it baffling that someone who considers themselves to be part of the "Health Care Professional Community" could be against what is so affectionately referred to as Obamacare.

While Obamacare didn't go far enough to covering everybody. Heck, at the very least, EVERYONE should be entitled to have MediCare and the benefits that it provides for the same cost that my wife and I pay each month.

How could a doctor or a health care "professional" have an attitude/opinion that would be against someone being able to afford to get health insurance coverage even with a pre-existing condition.

Here's an example on part of the law/Obamacare that is an immediate benefit to middle-aged men. IF you have health care coverage right now, your co-pay for preventative measures such as a colonoscopy is $0 - ZERO! A few years ago it would have been a few hundred dollars.

Sounds like a real compassionate health care professional who would be against potentially being able to save a person's life because they could now be able to afford to get a colonoscopy.

Anyone who is benefiting financially from Michigan's Medical Marijuana Law and votes for Mitt Romney makes about as much sense as someone who might be gay and a member of the Log Cabin Republicans...and voting for Romney...when he doesn't believe in gay marriage either.

Maybe there is a republican-themed medical marijuana website for these kind of "compassionate" individuals? If not, maybe they should start one! :butt2:
