You are looking for a type of gopher thought to be extinct on a remote island. You fly over the trees scanning the ground for gophers, find none, and conclude they are extinct. Someone points out that your method is flawed and neither proves nor disproves the existence of said gophers.

 

And then you tell him that he needs to prove that these gophers exist in order to be able to argue that the method for determining their presence is flawed...?
