My New Grow And I Have Questions

Hey everyone,

I started a thread a week or so ago about bugs in my room... well I was fortunate to get new clones to replace my bad ones...

I just planted 12 little plants (6 Snow White and 6 Vanilla Kush) into containers and I have a few questions....

- I am worrysome about chem burning the little girls, so I tend to not feed right away. After planting them I just watered and gave them a little root stimulator. I'm considering giving them another watering and root stimulator again. When should I begin feeding them? If it's now, should it be at 1/4 strength?

- My lights are hanging 30 inches away from the plants. I do that because I know they're sensitive at a young age but is that too far? Should/could I lower them?

- I am also only running 1 light at 300W. It can go up to 400W and 600W but again, I don't want to hurt them. What do you think?

I had good results last time I did this with my plants. I figure less is more with them and run a lower risk of injury (burns and chem burns) and since they're young I don't want to stress them out.

Am I ultimately stunting their growth though, by my "ultra" preventative measures? ( weak feeding of nutes, high lights, low wattage)

Thanks!!

All my young clones and seedlings get started under 1 60 watt twisty cfl once they reach 8-10 inches i move them into the veg cabinet under a 600 watt mh/hps hybrid bulb also i dont give any nutrients in veg the fox farm ocean forest has enough to reach the flower room in my garden.

I am using Organic Happy Frog soil....

you are right about Ocean Forest soil being good enough to feed clones and small plants. As the plant gets bigger, you transplant into bigger pots - and that same feeding from the soil continues. But, as the plant gets bigger - it starts to get root bound.

When clones are transplanted from a cup to a 1 gallon pot, I use Root 66 and Sugar Daddy per instructions.

As the plant grows in to the pot (you can stick your finger in the soil and feel the root density prevents you from penetrating the soil), you begin feeding with 50% solution, water, water. If the plant does not show leave curl, brown tips - increase the next dose to regular strength. Those dosages TechnaFlora lists on their sheet seems to be moderate - to avoid people killing plants. If you look at the bottles you can increase the dosages, but stick with the sheet instructions. (the Technaflora Starter Kit is only $39, it has everything for about 6-8 plants to start to finish)

A 60 watt CFL is the minimum, I use 85 watts CFLs x 2 in a closet. If the lighting is too weak, you will see very tall, skinny plants trying to reach up for the light, not good. If the lighting is too weak, the plant growth is stunted, it grows very small leaves, it is light green, it is stretched, and stressed. Stressed plants = pest problems coming soon. A CFL should about about 5-10 inches from the growing clones/small vegging. Make sure you check the Kelvin rating of the bulb, you want either 3200K or 6000/6500K - avoid the 5k.

I use dimmable ballast too, I tend to use it at the bulb's rating or higher. I have the Lumatek 600. I have run these since 2009. I have wondered if the dimming feature does weaken or shorten the bulb life span, but who cares - we replace them every 8 - 12 months.

You can be stressing your plants - so they are weaken against pest. Lighting is your biggest factor in building the strength of these plants. I would use the CFL to start the clones in cups (to save energy over using the HID regardless of dimming feature). You can use the CFLs x2 in your closet for months, it has enough light to make the plant very healthy and shape well. Then you should put then in the veg room, under the HID at 600 watts - you are now going to adjusts the light to plant height - Start the plants on the floor under the lights (lights installed about 5 feet), after a few days to adjust - I put crates in the room, and set the plants upon them, closer to the lights - about 2 feet under the light. (I use air cooled reflectors, so plants can grow inches away from the glass) The plants will grow the next 2 feet, now - remove the crates and set the plants on the floor.

Under caring for the plant is just as bad as overcaring, so you work to find the perfect middle ground for your strain.

It is best to start your nutes at 30% You should never have to go over 50% on the nutes, I use 3 part gh for my nutes and my medium is promix! I only use water on my clones, once I put them in their perm grow pot (which is from cup to grow pot, no more transplant after that)

The nutes have directions on them for the mix, that is what the nute companys want you to use, always go half strength, you can tell if it needs more of something as time goes by! the nute companys want you to buy more nutes, read the grow bible, they never recomend over 50% nutes!

as far as lites go, they say to hold your hand down at the top of your plant, if it is comfortable for your hand it is good for the plants!

You can ask 1 question to 20 people and most times you will get 20 diff answers! You realy need to find the best method for you! and read what ever you can! dont be discouraged if or when you lose a few, just get back on that horse and do it again, you will get it right eventualy! I can promise you that!

You will find many grow books in here, I like the greg green grow bible!

Greg Green - The Cannabis Grow Bible!

I hope this helps!

Peace

Jim
