(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - In Kalamazoo, people caught with a small amount of pot will now get a ticket instead of being arrested. The ordinance was unanimously approved by the city commission last week and goes into effect Thursday. It's expected to save the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety an enormous amount of resources. Starting Thursday, if you're caught with a small amount of marijuana in Kalamazoo the penalty is much less. Instead of getting arrested and spending a year in jail with $2,000 in fines drug offenders found with smaller amounts will now get a ticket and spend up to three months behind bars with a hundred dollar fine. KDPS says it spends enormous amounts of time and money cataloging and testing marijuana held as evidence and those resources can now be used elsewhere. "It's going to save resources as far as our detectives are concerned and it gives the officers an option of being able to write that appearance ticket which still takes care of the problem the drugs are taken from the person," said KDPS Asst. Chief Karianne Thomas. The new ordinance also lets people skip jail and go straight to probation if they've never been convicted of a drug offense before. If the offender pleads guilty and completes probation the case will be dismissed. New marijuana ordinance in Kalamazoo
AlternativeSolutionsPlus
Local Municipalities exercising good judgement and behavior. Congratulations Kalamazoo! On the surface this looks like a small step in the right direction. Anyone else have any thoughts on this subject in Kalamazoo or other areas where this type of policy has been instituted. Fat Freddy
It would have saved them more if simple possession was a civil infraction with a fine ranging from 50 bucks to say $250.00. The oversight fee for probation will amount to just about that. ( high end of the fine. ) So I guess this is some progress????
