The mis-government of Detroit is a hard, sad lesson in what happens when any single party gets and keeps a lock on offices. The party system is one of the 'checks and ballances' meant to short-circuit fraud and corruption, but Detroit (and to a lesser extent, Chicago), show the price the citizenry make themselves pay when a healthy 2 party (or more) switch in governments doesn't exist for 70 years.
