What a douche bag.

Republican Assemblyman Steve Katz has been charged with marijuana possession after a Thursday morning traffic stop on the Thruway.

The 59-year-old was initially stopped at 10 a.m. for allegedly driving 80 mph northbound on the toll road close by the town of Coeymans.

"After noting the odor of marijuana, a New York State Trooper found Katz in possession of a small bag of marijuana," a State Police's press release states.

Katz was released on an appearance ticket, and is scheduled to appear in the town of Coeymans Court on March 28.

In a brief statement, Katz said he "will not let this incident impede my public service and my calls for real mandate relief, a better economic climate and better services for those in need in New York. This should not overshadow the work I have done over the years for the public and my constituency.

"I am confident that once the facts are presented that this will quickly be put to rest," he said.

The Lower Hudson Valley lawmaker ran unsuccessfully last year for state Senate against his former ally Sen. Greg Ball. That bare-knuckle battle included the revelation that Katz, a veterinarian, had once been arrested for putting a dead dog in a dumpster, and another time for allegedly harming a feisty chihuahua during an exam. No charges were brought in either incident.

Katz currently sits on the Assembly's Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Committee as well as its Higher Education committee; last year, he voted against a bill that would have legalized medical marijuana. In recent weeks, he has been a strong voice in opposition to the SAFE gun control law, and has introduced legislation to repeal it.

Could he have possibly been experimenting with cannabis to see what the hubbub was all about? Maybe he wanted to evaluate the substance on his own in order to gain a better understanding of the issues surrounding cannabis. If so, I heartily endorse his actions and wish that all prohibitionists would do likewise.

God, Chaunc. We can only hope that to be the case. Somehow I strongly suspect otherwise though.

My negative side coming out again.
