Strain Recommendations?

Recommended Posts

The only way I can get to sleep at night is to medicate heavily with a good indica, and the only way I can stay asleep long enough is to eat a brownie when I go to bed. The problem I run into is that most indicas, while making me want to go to bed eventually, tend to make my mind more active. It's hard to sleep when you can't stop thinking. So far Purple Kush is the best, but even with that I have to try to stop thinking. Can anyone recommend a strain that will not only knock me out, but will also quiet my mind? Other strains I've tried are Smashberry, Northerberry, Blueberry, Critical Mass, and MK Ultra. They all make my mind too active.

Also, for you IBS sufferers out there, are there any stains you can recommend (for both day and night) to help alleviate the flu-like symptoms that come with IBS? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I believe that Purple Kush (and many Kush strains) are high in myrcene. Myrcene and THC are believed to create the "couch lock effect". You might try and look for strains that are high not only in THC, but also myrcene.

You might also benefit from utilizing calamus root to help negate some of the psychotropic effects of THC.

I've found some articles that talk about averages noticed in strains from testing services in other med States. There are some testing service sites that have info. Greenhouse does testing. Basically, it's sparatic but there's some info out there. I really wish there was someone putting it all together concisely in one place, but I don't believe there is. I have some bookmarks that I'll look for.

If you're not working with a cut that's been tested, and even if you are, I imagine that there'll be a decent amount of variance. Speaking in terms of averages this information seems useful nonetheless.

I'll look for some of those bookmarks.

February 07  What Terpenoids Are Showing Up in California Cannabis?

  Two analytic chemists in California have been testing Cannabis for terpenoid content and more are gearing up to do so. We asked them if the compounds that are showing up are the same as the ones mentioned by Ethan Russo in his influential paper on the "Entourage Effect" (limonene, alpha-pinene, myrcene, linalool, beta-caryophyllene, nerolidol, caryophyllene oxide, and phytol)?

   Jeff Raber of the Werc Shop said he would add terpinolene to the list of commonly encountered terpenoids. As of late December, his most notable findings:

  • Myrcene (which is said to be sedating) —3.2% by weight in a Pure Kush sample;

   • Limonene (alerting) —1.6% in White Diamond;

   • Alpha-Pinene —1.1 % in Haley's Comet;

   • Beta-Caryophylene —1% in Diablo OG.

   Don Land of Halent Labs also has been finding terpinolene in California Cannabis. (It's most abundant in the needles of fir trees.) Halent reported finding high levels of:

     • Limonene in Purple Gold Mine (2.3%) and Odyssey (1.3%);

     • Myrcene in Purple Kush (2%) and Super Silver Haze OG (2%);

     • Alpha-Pinene in Blue Dream (2.1%) and Sour Diesel (1.6%);

     • Beta-caryophyllene in Chem Dawg and Platinum Chem Dawg;

     • Terpinolene in Jack the Ripper (0.8%), LA Confidential (0.7%) and White Fire OG (0.7%);

     • Linalool in Kush Daddy and Fire OG 0.2%;

      • Phytol and caryophyllene oxide only in concentrates.

  Land adds, "Some strains, such as Blue Dream, Sour Diesel, and Super Silver Haze have been measured multiple times and are consistently high in the terpene specified…

  "Genetics seems to control the relative content, while skill of the grower determines the overall yield."

  The Werc Shop had tested "almost 1,000" samples for terpenoids as of late December 2011. The leaders to date:

     • Myrcene -3.2% in Pure Kush;

     • Limonene -1.6% in White Diamond;

     • Alpha-Pinene -1.1 % in Haley's Comet;

     • Beta-Caryophylene -1% in Diablo OG.

  Raber considers it too early to say which terpenoids predominatein a given strain. "They're all over the map. It will take a large number of samples before a pattern emerges. And the current naming system is quite convoluted. We are enlisting some bioinformatics specialists to help us mine the information more systematically."

The only breeders I'm aware of with extensive cannabis profile information:

It seems like this type of testing, along with PCR, could vastly improve upon current cannabis breeding methods.

Do you grow your own meds, use a caregiver, or procure them via other means?  If you or your caregiver are the grower, try letting them run longer in flower so that the trichomes switch from cloudy to amber.  This will increase the couchlock/sedation at the expense of some THC - which in your case is probably a good thing.  I, too, have hella bad insomnia, and Purple Kush in a vape + medibles is one of my main knockdown formulas.  I also run Free Leonard to the point where its 30% amber, 60% cloudy, and 10% clear.  At that point it's not remotely usable in a social setting, but it puts me down for the count.

Honestly, you need to grow a variety of the same strain and pull the cannabis plant with the traits you want and clone it for production.  Purple strains tend to quiet the mind according to some (I'd agree), and kush is great for a more sedate effect.

Querkle and Blue Hash are what I have for doing what you are speaking of, because I am much the same way.  Most people like being high, I like being stoned and calm.  I think that's the difference between medical and recreational use, it's more end user specific, not (the highest thc ever!).

I had a Querkle from a Dispensary and a Querkle I grew from seed.  The Querkle I grew was peaceful, stony and leaned towards the Purple Urkle, while the Dispensary Querkle was racy, fast and leaned towards Space Queen.  Whereas with mine, SQ sat back in the mix and created meditative euphoria and peacefulness.

If someone recommends something and it doesn't work, search through more beans because something that will work might be hiding in the same strain.

White Rhino, Indica leaning kush's, Juicy Fruit, Power Kush; all good for what you want (with the right cut).  True leaning from the grow, not what the breeder pack says or the Dispensary label.  Most Dispensary labeling is a breeder repeat and has nothing to do with actual content.  I can tell that just by smoking it.

Even Dylon felt more like a CBD relaxant than getting high.  Pretty mentally mellow.

Lots of OG's lean sativa.  Deadhead OG is my favorite sativa OG.  In fact, true OG is a sativa plant.  It's a 6' tall kush with tiny golfball buds.  I agree, the right OG has a paralyzer effect and a nice euphoria with medical qualities for numbing a patient in a sativa way more than an indica way, which is kind of unique, in my mind.  I associate numbing and sedatives with indica's.

Also, when I let it go amber with some hybrids, those amber sativa glands can get mentally pretty wild and intense, and not in a couch-lock kind of way.  I let a grape krush go amber that nearly made me shake.  It was just a really bad paranoid cut, much like a Flav I have finishing now that I'll cull after this harvest.  I'm experimenting with it before I scrap it to see what else can be done with it and learn more about it.

Look into anything Grape Stomper OG or pretty much all seeds from Gage Green.  Deep Chunk hybrids are powerful as well.  At one point I grew like 10 different Deep Chunk hybrids.
