5 Things To Know About Legal Marijuana In Colorado

Colorado has become the first state to adopt regulations for recreational marijuana businesses, which are expected to open at the beginning of next year.

The rules released this week by the state Department of Revenue cover everything from pot-shop licensing to marijuana packaging and advertising. Here are five things to know about the regulations:

OPEN YOUR CHECKBOOK: Pot store applications cost up to $5,000; operating licenses cost from $2,750 to $14,000; anyone wanting to sell both medical and recreational marijuana would pay double those amounts. Sales are legal starting Jan. 1.

SEED TO SALE: Colorado will require video surveillance and online inventory tracking of all plants as they grow and are prepared, packaged and sold to customers.

BACKGROUND CHECKS: Successful business applicants must pass a gantlet of criminal background checks to weed out recent drug felons and people with possible ties to criminal drug cartels. Everyone in the industry, from shop owners to “bud-tenders,” must reside in Colorado.

HOW MUCH: Adults over 21 can grow up to six plants or buy up to one ounce of pot in retail stores. Medical patients can buy up to two ounces. Out-of-state visitors would be limited to one-fourth of an ounce per retail transaction, though they could legally possess the full ounce. They cannot take it home with them.

PACKAGING: Marijuana will be placed into child-resistant packages before leaving the store. Labels will list the pot’s potency and any non-organic pesticides or fungicides used.

We're allowed 12 plants and 2.5 oz. now.

But here in Michigan I have to go through a STATE agency PAY them money every two years and HOPE they approve me... and then STILL have to deal with rogue LEO kicking my door in.

Just ask the folks in Oakland County.

And if that $$$ you pay every two years to get your card is NOT A TAX, then WHAT would you call it?

Basically, if a ballot provision does not somehow instruct the legislature to remove MCL 333.7401(2)(d), then marijuana is not legal, and it is just a scam that will get regular people in trouble while digging a deep moat of safety, filled with money, for commercial providers.

Absolutely agree.

Any recreational use laws should have a prevision that counteracts that legislation and any other law that would interfere with the new cannabis legislation, which I believe the Colorado law did (not that I'm in love with that particular legislation).

The federal laws at this point still have to be dealt with, but with the way things are going nationally, it will only be a matter of time until those laws are changed as well, and we can only hope that the DEA is going to follow through on what they have said.

But all of our opinions and the discussion on a 'recreation use' law is just bull shite and hype until a 'recreational use law' is written and the petitions are signed to get it on a ballot OR until the pols in Lansing start a write-up of the law to bypass the wishes of the voters.

And I for one have certainly appreciated the thoughts and opinions and the cordiality from everyone that has gone along with the discussion.

I still believe however, that we need to be on our toes to make sure any new legislation is as good as it can be, because a 'recreational use' law will be coming to Michigan, and probably within the next few years.

Again, thanks to all for the cordial debate.

we're already making plans to be there for 4/20

renting a house for 10 days. found a few with 6-8 bedrooms/private bath.........the most expensive was $750 night/$4500 week

that's less than 85 a night per room w/private bath, full kitchen and run of a huge house in Denver

just trying to decide if we want to be in the city or up in the mountains and get a final count on solid commitments before locking in our arrangements.

I think it will be an epic blast!!

6 plants UNTAXED, no need to pay the STATE for a CARD, no Payment to a DOCTOR, and no LARA RECORDS that can be invaded... thanks, but I think I might join LongHairBri on his trip to Colorado and wait for the fat lady to sing.

And might as well get my door kicked in in Colorado as Michigan, don't see any difference, do you?

And if you've got a card through LARA, your butt IS already barcoded and YOU paid them to do it.
