Half of Wisconsin Voters Favor Marijuana Legalization, Lawmakers Not On Board

A new poll by the Marquette University Law School shows that 49.7% of Wisconsin voters support the legalization of recreational marijuana.  However, that does not mean that lawmakers are on the same page.

In a recent interview, gubernatorial candidate Mary Burke was asked what she though about cannabis legalization.  Although Burke has indicated that she could support legalizing medical marijuana, she answered, “I don’t think that’s where the people of Wisconsin are at.”

Even lawmakers who have proposed medical marijuana bills in the state, including Senator Jon Erpenbach and Representative Chris Taylor, have indicated that they are not totally on board with the recreational legalization of marijuana.  Even medical marijuana seems like a stretch for Wisconsin, as not even one Republican signed on to Taylor and Erpenbach’s legislation earlier this year.
