Legislation that would give medical marijuana patients more ways to obtain and use cannabis is one step closer to becoming law.

Legislation that would give medical marijuana patients more ways to obtain and use cannabis is one step closer to becoming law.

A state House panel unanimously approved the bills today Tuesday.

We have more from The Michigan Public Radio Network’s Jake Neher.

One bill would allow medical marijuana dispensaries to operate in Michigan again. Recent court rulings have all but stopped them from distributing cannabis. The legislation would let communities decide whether to allow them under new regulations. Another bill would let state-registered patients use edible forms of marijuana.

Tim Beck is a leading advocate for medical marijuana issues in Lansing. He says the votes show state lawmakers are more willing than ever to support these kinds of issues.

“A unanimous vote – that’s powerful,” he says. “It sends a really, really strong message.”

Beck and others working on the bills say they’re likely to come up for votes in the full state House before the end of the week.
