Unfair--There's A Revolt Coming Aka Occupy Wall Street

Recommended Posts

Health care is floating the costs of seniors on the backs of young people who don't get sick.  And by law the unsick get stuck with the bill for those who do get sick.  And behold!  The program does not cover the one major out-of-pocket cost for the young, and that is mmj.

Same unfairness in social security--the few young workers pay for the senior recipients.

i'm 60, one of the beneficiaries of this financial screwing of the young.

When mandatory euthenasia for seniors arrives, this will be the burr that raised it...

This country sees it as its duty to care for the aged and infirm. I, and many others, see this as a moral duty. Despite what all the naysayer conservatives say, the programs set up to care for old people are in no danger of going "broke". They will only go broke if the conservatives are allowed to run them into the ground by not financing them. Conservatives hate these programs and will do anything they can to stop them.

Apparently people who are well off are rather stingy when it comes to spending money. They do not like to pay taxes because they receive much less in benefits than they pay in. They do not like the government taking their money and giving it to people that they feel are "unworthy" of receiving it.

To them I say: America. Love it or leave it. Trouble is there is no better place for them to go. Everybody wants their money.

What a douchebag.

Medicare is an INSURANCE program for Seniors which not only have they paid for all their working lifetime, they pay a monthly fee to even have Medicare.  I would have to look again, but it is around $100/monthish+-.

Social Security is a retirement program that has lowered Senior destitute poverty levels from around 47% to about 15%+-.  You pay into it just like any program while you are working and then similar to life insurance, you get paid when you retire at a predetermined age set forth by Congress.  Social Security over the course of its existence has run at a positive income. Thus the complaints of raiding the Social Security Fund and Al Gore trying to pass a "Social Security Lockbox" that would have protected the excess yearly funding of SS into a different fund so they quit spending our money on unneeded military expenses. :-)

We live in a Society and doing such requires certain tolerances and sacrifices to said Society to make it better. these programs have completely changed the face of America with at least 3 generations plus their families living in the same household and 100% supporting your elderly parents and disabled family members.  By everyone pitching in some, we have allowed a better society.  Much much better.

You're the guy that watched the trains pull into the Death Camps but knew NOTHING about it.

You apparently have a mind set that has been cultivated by the hand wringers on the right (conservatives/Republicans) who have been preaching for years that the end of the world is here. The problem with these people is that they rely on their emotions instead of their intellect in order to form their views of the world. The right wingers throw out gobs of "slightly" twisted facts and then whip their followers into a frenzy.

Social security and Medicare are complicated problems that require a person to sit down and examine the facts in order to come to a sensible conclusion about the programs future.

The baby boomer generation is like a large rat that has been swallowed by a snake. It passes through the system in a big lump and gets smaller as it gets digested by the host before being excreted. The baby boomers are an anomaly. We will be through the system in another 20-30 years and then the process will return to normal. In the meantime, the Social Security program will require a few minor tweaks in order for it to stay solvent while the boomers head towards the big anal expungement at the end of their time. There are all manners of ways to "fix" the system. Google it.

Medicare, and in fact the entire system of medical care in this country, needs to be completely overhauled...period. It is only going broke because of the greed inherent in the current system.

This is exactly what I am talking about when I say that people who live in Faux News World are living in a parallel universe that is totally unaffected by reality or facts.

Passed by Congress on July 2, 1909, and ratified February 3, 1913, the 16th amendment established Congress's right to impose a Federal income tax.

btn_print-friendly_off.gif

Far-reaching in its social as well as its economic impact, the income tax amendment became part of the Constitution by a curious series of events culminating in a bit of political maneuvering that went awry.

The financial requirements of the Civil War prompted the first American income tax in 1861. At first, Congress placed a flat 3-percent tax on all incomes over $800 and later modified this principle to include a graduated tax. Congress repealed the income tax in 1872, but the concept did not disappear.

After the Civil War, the growing industrial and financial markets of the eastern United States generally prospered. But the farmers of the south and west suffered from low prices for their farm products, while they were forced to pay high prices for manufactured goods. Throughout the 1860s, 1870s, and 1880s, farmers formed such political organizations as the Grange, the Greenback Party, the National Farmers’ Alliance, and the People’s (Populist) Party. All of these groups advocated many reforms (see the Interstate Commerce Act) considered radical for the times, including a graduated income tax.

In 1894, as part of a high tariff bill, Congress enacted a 2-percent tax on income over $4,000. The tax was almost immediately struck down by a five-to-four decision of the Supreme Court, even though the Court had upheld the constitutionality of the Civil War tax as recently as 1881. Although farm organizations denounced the Court’s decision as a prime example of the alliance of government and business against the farmer, a general return of prosperity around the turn of the century softened the demand for reform. Democratic Party Platforms under the leadership of three-time Presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan, however, consistently included an income tax plank, and the progressive wing of the Republican Party also espoused the concept.

In 1909 progressives in Congress again attached a provision for an income tax to a tariff bill. Conservatives, hoping to kill the idea for good, proposed a constitutional amendment enacting such a tax; they believed an amendment would never received ratification by three-fourths of the states. Much to their surprise, the amendment was ratified by one state legislature after another, and on February 25, 1913, with the certification by Secretary of State Philander C. Knox, the 16th amendment took effect. Yet in 1913, due to generous exemptions and deductions, less than 1 percent of the population paid income taxes at the rate of only 1 percent of net income.

This document settled the constitutional question of how to tax income and, by so doing, effected dramatic changes in the American way of life.

If you spend your time strengthing your mind in a hateful way your whole life will be full of it. Teach it to be strong and KIND, not strong and hateful. You will have a better life.

Oh and my parents were active Democrats. They taught us to think for ourselves and elected most of the bums that are STILL in office today. Somehow I don't think my Dad would approve of socialism. And now you want to get into the CIVIL WAR? Dems, the Party of Slavery and the KKK? Gov George Wallace refusing black students admittance to school? Segregation? But i am sure you all will find some site that will say ole Abe didn't pass a Constitutional admendment to aboloish slavery, huh?

In an effort to provide a more reasonable discussion based on factual data: The first Income Tax was passed for a relatively brief period when then Pres Lincoln along with that current  US Congress  enacted an Income Tax (the Revenue Act of 1862) to pay for the cost of the Civil War, however it was allowed to be extinguished 11 years later in 1872.

Next month marks the 101st  anniversary of the passing of the 16th amendment which  founded the current IRS in Feb 1913. It occurred during the administration of Pres Woodrow Wilson . This was only a precursor to his most infamous act, the passing of the Federal Reserve Act on Dec 23, 1913.  100 years ago that was the lump of coal left for our Christmas that year.

WW-1 originally called the European War was right around the corner, beginning July 28, 1914. If you included the outbreak of the Spanish Flue which was pretty much the most punishing facet to human life during this period. It became the deciding factor in ending this unprecedented land grab. Strangely enough though, Spain had remained neutral throughout the "Great ? War".

Holy crap. You are really out there. None of the stuff you have said here makes any sense. Oh, and I don't want to continue this discussion. There is no point in it.
