NFL Players May be Allowed to Use Medical Marijuana

National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell announced to ESPN  that he may be open to allowing players to use marijuana for medical purposes.

He said, “I don’t know what’s going to develop as far as the next opportunity for medicine to evolve and to help either deal with pain or help deal with injuries, but we will continue to support the evolution of medicine.”

Marijuana use is currently banned under the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement, despite the fact that it is legal for medical use in a number of states where teams play and is legal for recreational use in Washington and Colorado.

The agreement does not expire until 2021, meaning that the policy likely will not be renegotiated any time soon.  However, there may be a loophole.  The agreement only bans the “illegal use” of marijuana, meaning that players may be able to use marijuana in states where it is legal without facing punishment.

This statement from Goodell marks the NFL’s first comment on marijuana use since recreational marijuana was legalized in Colorado and Washington in 2012.
