More people are using the cannabis plant as modern basic and clinical science reaffirms and extends its medicinal uses. Concomitantly, concern and opposition to smoked medicine has occurred, in part due to the known carcinogenic consequences of smoking tobacco. Are these reactions justified? While chemically very similar, there are fundamental differences in the pharmacological properties between cannabis and tobacco smoke. Cannabis smoke contains cannabinoids whereas tobacco smoke contains nicotine. Available scientific data, that examines the carcinogenic properties of inhaling smoke and its biological consequences, suggests reasons why tobacco smoke, but not cannabis smoke, may result in lung cancer.

that link is appreciated.

I wonder what the stats are when we consider people that smoke cigarettes, as well as cannabis, and the rates at which they seem to be protected

There is a book grass match called "the pot book" Which goes over alot of medical data dealing with marijuana, as well as comparisons of tobacco, marijuana, hard drugs, alcohol...its very well written out, with very little bias for or against medical marijuana. The woman that wrote it (Julie Holland) is a psychiatrist that specializes in psycho pharmacology, and the answer to the question you asked is within the book..I unfortunately could not find the exact page to get a link to ya or answer, but you may be interested in the book for the vast amounts of knowledge to be gained, as well as for the answer your looking for:)
