Newbie To Wax And E-Cannabis

Recommended Posts

I would like to take the plunge into e-cannabis.  In preparation, I have been reading and rereading these threads and GG's blog.

I have recently come into a reasonable quantity of "Ear Wax".  I have plenty of experience with shatter and butter, but this stuff is different.  It is very thick and gooey.  It sticks to everything.  I have to heat the bowl in my pen vape just to be able to get it off the dab tool.  It is pretty potent, though.

I would like to turn some of this stuff (a very small batch at first) into e-cannabis.

How should I heat up some of this ear goo in order to cut it with PG USP?  Can I put it in the microwave, or buy a cup warmer?

I will purchase GG's latest recommendation of a CE-5 BDC with VV 900mAh e-go twist.

Any comments or suggestions are appreciated, either on the handling of the wax or the e-cannabis preparation.  It will be a number of days before I have the gear, so I have time to adjust my plans.

Well, I don't really recommend the CE5 BDC for cannabis oil, mostly due to the taste. I do highly recommend it for e-cigarettes.

For a pen vape, I think you will prefer this: http://www.myvaporstore.com/Kanger_Aerotank_Mini_p/kraet-kmi.htm It's even on sale! I didn't get the sale price or I would have bought 2!

If you want to go a more inexpensive route to give it a try I would go with a standard iClear16. It is a cheap unit that the e-cannabis oil can taste really good in. You will have to use the tip cap or leave it standing up or it can leak out the mouthpiece.

Good quality earwax should work pretty well. I can't say that I have tried it though, but others have reported good success with shatter, QWISO, BHO, and RSO. With vaping the oil has to be really clean to taste good.

Here is where I get my PG USP: https://highdesertvapes.com/products/USP-Kosher-Proplyene-Glycol-%28PG%29.html Don't let the picture fool you, you will get Kosher PG USP. They just used the wrong picture for the description.

If you like it, or if it seems worthy, give the innokin SVD a try with the KangerTech AeroTank Mega. I like to use the 18350 batteries. It literally feels like a medical quality industrial unit. Currently that is the best rig I have used. No complaints yet.

You ask for comments and suggestions:  No need at all for a card to do these things, the card doesn't cover them so why waste your time and money on a card?  Anyone can do what you're doing with an equal level of legality--none.

Do not use the microwave! JUST SAY NO!  LOL

Use a metal measuring cup and a coffee mug warmer. Like in the picture here.

Testing For GGs vapor blog 6 14 14 006

See the measuring cup tipped against the tobacco can? I leave it like that, but on the coffee cup warmer. Put about a gram of oil into the pan. When the oil melts, if you see any bubbling, let it bubble for a little bit, remove it from the heat but keep it tilted up. Add around 1/2 gram of PG USP. I use a 1mL syringe and use that to stir the oil around. Put it back onto the heat, still tipped up. Continue to stir with the syringe. Suck some the oil in and blow it back out. This helps with the mixing. Quickly remove from heat. Keep in mind this is a coffee MUG warmer. It is very easy to vaporize the oil into the air so you need to be careful after adding the PG USP to not let it sit on the heat too long. It only takes minutes. Suck it up into the syringe at that point and you have some e-cannabis oil. I only mix what I need when I need it, over time the mixture can separate. The syringe is usually sufficient for filling the clearomziers. With the mini tank that I recommend, it is very difficult to fill it without getting some oil into the center tube, it requires a bit more patience. There probably are better tools for filling the smaller tanks, like a dropper for e-cigg oils for mixing flavors. If you are careful and patient you can fill it just fine with the 1mL syringe.

I love e-cannabis! The force is with me!

Do I need an adaptor with the e-go twist battery?

Which coils do you use, 1.5 or 2.0 ohms?

No adapter necessary. I prefer the smaller eGo C Twist 650 mAh, mostly because they are shorter, more convenient to carry. That has eGo threads and 510 threads. The AeroTank Mega and the AeroTank have 510 threads. The AeroTank mini uses the larger eGo threads.

As for the coils that I use for the mini and mega, I think I like the 1.5 ohm coils better. The mini comes with 1.5 ohm coils, the mega comes with 2.0 ohm coils. I have only tried the 2.0 ohm coils in the mini. The impression I got is it is a little more tasty, smaller hit, and a little more after burn on my throat. Otherwise, the 1.5 and 2.0 ohm coils are close. The 1.5 ohm coil uses less power so you can use them on an eGo battery that is not VV. I still always recommend the VV batteries.

Most of the stuff posted in my blog will attach to the VV eGo battery. The mega tank should work just fine on an eGo battery too, be a little top heavy, but it will work. I have not tried the 2.0 ohm coil in the mega yet, I immediately installed a 1.5 ohm coil.

So far I have kept the Mega standing up on my SVD and so far no leaking. Lying sideways, well I don't know if it will leak or not. Same goes for the mini. So far I haven't had leaking issues except it did drip to the battery once, no biggie. Just wiped it up before putting it on the charger.

With the mini, I have filled it three times now. Then I cleaned the coil by soaking it in 190 everclear. Put it back together and it is working like new.

The coils are only a couple bucks anyway so I don't mind replacing them every 3-6 grams of use.

What do you think about just dropping the coil in Isopropyl then wiping it off?  I don't have 190 everclear.

No, that could be a problem. Especially with the new coils. The wicks are encased so getting all of the iso out would be a problem.

In this case, I have nothing against using 100 proof vodka. I clean a lot of my e-cigg and e-cannabis stuff with vodka. 151 Everclear will do as well.

Thanks for the help GG.  I wouldn't have been comfortable doing this without all the work you have done.

I'll update the thread with my experiences as I go.

One last one for now.  It appears that the only difference between the original aerotank, the mini and the mega is the capacity of the tank.  Is that correct?

No, there are differences other than the tank sizes. They made some improvements.

I completely dissected an AeroTank and it is quite a bit different than the Mega and Mini. It is cool how they will all take the same coils.

I don't know all of the differences yet. I have not fully dissected the mega or mini.

With the mini, for some reason the 1.5 ohm coil uses less power so it is capable of being used on a regular battery (VV not necessary). I noticed that it is very crucial to adjust the airflow just right for taste and quality effects. With the 1.5 ohm coil you will want your battery power setting just about as low as it goes if using a VV battery. You will want to choke the airflow down towards its lowest setting. It will give the most flavor and a nicer hit.

Keep in mind, here and on my blog I reference my experiences. Others may have different outcomes and views.

Whatever you decide to do, I hope it works out for you. Please let us know either way.

I have decided on getting the mega instead of the mini.  Should I up the recipe from 1.5 ml to 3 ml?  If so, should I get 3 ml syringes?

Yes, you will want to up your mixture if you want to see your oil. In the Mega a lot of the oil goes below the glass. Pretty cool design actually. I would highly recommend you get a few 1.5 ohm coils as well so you can compare and decide which you like better. The Mega comes with 2.0 ohm coils.

I sampled a 2.0 ohm coil in the mini. It was a little different. It seems it gave a smaller hit. I have not tried a 2.0 ohm coil in the Mega. It may be just as good or better than the 1.5 ohm.

The mega fits great on a SVD. That is one of the reasons I like it the best. Honestly, so far, the Mega seems to outdo any rig I have tried. It will work just fine on an eGo C Twist pen battery too. I must say though, the Mini may be a little more harsh, but the potency and all that is right up there with the big boys. I like them both. The Mega on my SVD is the most tasty. Part of it is the design, metal vs. glass percentages in my opinion. I recommend if you get a Mega, take it apart when you get it (take the glass out), let a fan blow on it for a little while. This will help remove the stale air. The Mini has the same issue.

You can get 3mL or 5mL syringes, even 10mL if you like. The tips are pretty much the same size. Make sure you get extras. In many cases the 1mL can be preferred but they can go bad easy from sucking up the warm oil. The plunger wears and pops out the end easy. I have not come across that issue with the 10mL syringes that I typically use. I have had the 10mL syringes become difficult to use. Personal preference and your access to oil will be the deciding factor for you. Next time I order syringes I will try out some 3mL just to accommodate my Mega!

The way I do it is to put a half gram or full gram of BHO, ISO, shatter, wax, what have you, into a shot glass and then set it in a pan of hot water of the stove - a double boiler. Just hot enough to get the stuff to melt, then add your PG or PEG. Last night I used .5 gram of BHO and .5 ml of PG. It turned out pretty good. The BHO wax took several minutes of heat to breakdown and liquefy. You want to stir it well. Then suck it up in the syringe and inject into your tank of choice. Personally if I had plenty of concentrate I would winterize it into shatter. It's cleaner and more concentrated, but it's not necessary.

Since I discovered GG's blog I have filled around a dozen tanks and have only been happy with a few of them. Be prepared to experiment and make mistakes. It's a fun process and you can get addicted to the gear.

Thanks Nix!

My wax is stored in small containers.  They will be able to withstand some warmth.

Removing the material in order to move it to the metal measuring cup was a real concern for me.  This wax is extremely sticky.

Too bad I already ordered the warmer and cup, could have saved some bucks.

OK.  So a little bit about me.

I am disabled and on a fixed income.  Money, after health, is my biggest obstacle.  Medicine is my largest monthly expense.

I have used concentrates in the past, but only on a casual basis.  I couldn't figure out the economics of bud vs. wax/shatter.  I thought I couldn't afford concentrates.

After following the forums and blogs and googling a bunch of stuff, I decided to give it a try.  Worst case is I spend a part of a month unmedicated.  The thought of running out was also a cause of concern.

After my first week of only vaping wax, I realized I was wrong.  I have done a 180.

The following table represents my investment so far:

Kanger Aerotank MEGA Authentic Adjustable Airflow Atomizer Tank $26.75

Portable Desktop PC Computer Tea Coffee Cup Mug Warmer          $ 5.00

eGo-C Twist Battery 900mAh VV                                                       $10.95

3Pk Universal USB Charger eGo batteries+Wall Charger                  $10.80

GENUINE Kanger Dual Coil @ 1.5ohm                                               $ 9.95 5pk

Pure Propylene Glycol PG USP Grade - 4 oz                                     $ 6.99

Stainless Steel Coffee Measuring Scoop                                           $ 5.99

(6) Oral Syringes No Needle 3 ML 1/2 TBSP Dose Syringe               $ 7.19

Vinyl Medline CURAD 3G Powder/Latex Free Gloves                        $ 7.55 50pk

Total                                                                                                 $91.17

I used ebay for all of these items.  I have had some bad experiences with ebay in the past.  They always reminded me that I was covered by a money back guarantee.  In every case I had a problem, the vendor made it right immediately.  Ebay also had the best prices on these items.

More info for ebay folks.  I used the following filters:  US Only for vendors, free shipping and buy it now.  I didn't want to wait a long time and I don't want to do business with the shysters that have a low price on an item and make it up in the "Shipping and Handling".  If I were willing to use foreign vendors I would have saved money, but I would be waiting for a long time.  I started ordering yesterday, finished this morning, and everything will be here by Saturday. Over half of this amount is a one time investment.  I also didn't need the measuring scoop or cup warmer (thanks Nix :thumbsu: ).  I am glad I have them just in case.

The syringes are over 4x more expensive then cheap, disposable ones.  They have a nipple on the end that may make for easier loading the tank, and I may be able to reuse them.  In the future I will use the cheap ones if I think I can.

Next month, I plan on gifting my patient with a rig.  I am thinking the same tank with a 650mAh ego-c twist VV.  My budget is $37 and I bet it comes in under that.  I also will get some 190 everclear if they still ship to MI.

After I receive all the items, I will report back on how all this ebay purchasing worked out.

He's kind of lucky, you started kind of early before bottom coil units were available. We tested the first experimental failure units when it comes to leakage.

So far I have consumed about 2 grams from the Mega tank and it has been 100% flawless to this point. I will note that I leave the unit standing up to eliminate the possibility of leaking.

He ma not run into some of the failures we did.

Yes, the process of elimination has been a lot of fun. I see that KangerTech has some more cool looking units coming out too! :P

Truly, so far, it seems like the KangerTech AeroTank Mega and an AVP vape are made for each other and can't be beat. Just one big problem, it is only going to be as good as the oil that is put into it.

Nah, not a wast of money. There might be days where you prefer to sit and do the mixing rather than standing at the stove. You never know.

I use the warmer for all kinds of things. Clean up, reclaim, purging, etc.

The purpose for tipping the cup at all times so I can do small doses, like 5 grams or less, and keep it pooled up so there is less waste and less effort to get it into the syringe.

Now when it comes to mixing the PG USP into the concentrate it is not so much the percentage. Each concentrate has its own thickness and will require more or less PG USP than another. The goal is to thin the concentrate to about the consistency of vegetable glycerine or even like vegetable oil when the oil is cool. It will be thinner when it is warm. After a few attempts you will get the process down.

When you first fill the unit, let it soak for a few minutes before using it. This will ensure the wicks in the coil get saturated. You can always leave it standing up by placing it into a glass or cup.

Hmmmm, I may need to start shopping E-Bay again! :D

It's the little tips like you and Nix have given me that is going to really help with the learning curve.  Thank you both for being so helpful.

You're absolutely right GG, the warmer will come in very handy.

I don't know what vegetable glycerine is, is it thicker than vegetable oil?

I do believe that VG is a bit thicker than vegetable oil. Not much, but a bit.

  • 2 weeks later...

My juice making experiments are going quite well.  I have made 2 small batches so far (2.5 grams of wax).  I will have about a week before I need another batch.

I probably still have more questions than answers.

I will post more after my next batch.

I would like to start winterizing my wax.  Where might I find a good thread on how to do that?

Peace

Agreed with Restorium2. Skunkfarm is the best resource for concentrate science.

Here is what I do:

Dissolve your BHO or ISO in a mason jar with a couple fingers worth of ethanol. You can use moonshine, everclear, or any 190 proof booze. I use a metal tool like a knife to crush the BHO if it's not dissolving entirely. You can filter it now, at the end of winterization or, both. I usually do it at the end. Cover your mason jar so no particles get in it and put it in the freezer for 48 hours. You will see a waxy buildup (plant inpurities) coalesce in the jar. Pour the alcohol through a coffee filter onto a pyrex dish. I use a double boiler method on low to evaporate the alcohol but you can also just let it air dry. Scrape up what's left and you got shatter. Then just heat it up and blend with PG.

I use a large flask with a vacuum port on it, a large ceramic funnel that holds a coffee filter, and my seal a meal machine to provide the vacuum through the external port. That way it only takes 20 minutes to suck a couple cups of liquid through the funnel/filter. Make sure the ceramic funnel is cold so the lipids and waxes don't go back into solution as you wait for it to be filtered.
