window units do not exchange air between walls. but they are not air tight either. when a new one is opened I disassemble it and caulk around the seams of the foam insulation for a positive seal.  no smells escape.  but, al fo the recycled dirt on the other side of the grow room does indeed smell like cannabis.  grrrr
