bobandtorey
LANSING- A meeting on Tuesday in the Michigan House could provide clarity on the direction the legislature plans to take with pending medical marijuana legislation. The House Judiciary will conduct what their official meeting notice calls "AN OVERVIEW PRESENTATION ON THE MEDICAL MARIHUANA ACT" during their regular session at noon on Tuesday, April 21. Rep. Klint Kesto, a Republican from Oakland County, chairs the House Judiciary Committee. His office confirmed the presentation will be conducted by the Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan. The meeting is scheduled for a single hour, per the House Clerk's office Also up for consideration during that session: 4 bills, three of which deal with firearms law. The fourth originates from Sen. Jones, who proposes an amendment of the Michigan Medical Marihuana Act (MMMA) to allow landlords to ban smoking and cultivation of marijuana from rental properties. Many advocates are hoping to learn the fate of a pair of bills launched three years ago and re-introduced in this year's legislature. The Provisioning Centers Act and the Smoking Alternatives bills, HB 4209 and HB 4210, are assigned to Rep. Kesto's committee but have not been formally scheduled for a hearing. Sen. Jones' bill has already been through the Senate Judiciary Committee and been approved by the full Senate. The House Judiciary Committee meeting will take place at noon, Tuesday April 21 in Room 521, House Office Building, 124 N Capitol Ave, Lansing, MI 48933 Rep. Kesto can be reached through his office at: Phone: (517) 373-1799FAX: (517) 373-8361 Email: KlintKesto@house.mi.gov Questions regarding the Judiciary Committee can be addressed through: Committee Clerk: Melissa WeipertPhone: 517-373-5176

bobandtorey
Tomorrow the Prosecutors Association will give an overview of the MMMA to the Judiciary Committee. I noticed there were some complaints about this but thought it was important to let Everyone knows this has been a standard way to kick off our hearings for some time and is not anything new. Ken Steckar will put on another presentation which will include a summary of what the voters enacted, every succeeding court case, how they ruled and what we have now. This is in preparation For our hearings on HB 4209 and 4210 which will be heard in the following weeks. We are also expecting a substitute landlord-tenant bill will be voted on as well which will remove the added Criminal penalty that currently exists in that bill. There will not be any public testimony tomorrow and anyone who cannot attend can watch it on house TV.
