Campden Tablets

WET

Recommended Posts

Was just out helping someone do a cider and they threw some campden tablets in the water. I inquired and learned a little at the time. I revisited the subject and found that these could be very useful to some growers.

Campden tablets/potassium or sodium metabisulfite. This stuff removes chlorine and more importantly chloramine from water. My guess is that it would leave some sodium or potassium behind. Not sure of the impact. Unfortunately, I have no need for them as my water is carbon filtered, but the info is useful to someone I hope. They are used in beer and wine making, so I would guess a store specializing in brewing would have them.

I  wouldn't use them.  Adds TDS levels and can effect microbial life.

You would need to let the water sit out and air for 24hours with the tabs, which means most chlorine would have gassed off anyway. The concern is for chloramine and there are much better ways to deal with it.

Its like pouring salt in your water basically.  ;-)
