The city-by-city decriminalization in Michigan emulates the state-by-state approach. There are now several legal medical marijuana states as well as a few states that have legalized recreational use.

Order City Date
1 Ann Arbor 4/1972
2 Kalamazoo* 10/2012
3 Detroit 11/2012
4 Flint 11/2012
5 Grand Rapids 11/2012
6 Ypsilanti** 11/2012
7 Ferndale 11/2013
8 Jackson 11/2013
9 Lansing 11/2013
10 Hazel Park 8/2014
11 Oak Park 8/2014
12 Berkley 11/2014

*Possession is still a criminal offense in Kalamazoo, but the city lowered penalties and removed the option of arrest.

** Voters in Ypsilanti voted in support of a “lowest priority initiative,” designed to redirect police efforts away from enforcing laws against marijuana in lieu of more serious crime.
