BALLOT PROPOSALS-POLL

Poll: Measure to rewrite Mich. constitution trails

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - A new poll says a majority of Michigan voters oppose calling a convention to rewrite the state constitution. The poll released Thursday by EPIC-MRA says 57 percent of voters would oppose Proposal 1 while 31 percent would support it. Twelve percent were undecided in the survey of 600 likely voters conducted from Saturday through Tuesday for the Detroit Free Press and TV stations WXYZ, WJRT, WOOD and WILX. It had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points. The poll says 76 percent supported Proposal 2 on next Tuesday's ballot, which would prohibit certain felons from holding public office for 20 years after a conviction. Nineteen percent were opposed and 5 percent were undecided.

SUPREME COURT-POLL

Poll: GOP-nominated Supreme Court candidates ahead

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - A new poll shows Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Mary Beth Kelly and Justice Bob Young leading the field of five candidates running for two seats on the Michigan Supreme Court. Thirty-seven percent of voters remain undecided. Twenty-four percent said they'd back Kelly while 20 percent said they'd back Young, the GOP nominees. For Democratic nominees, Justice Alton Thomas Davis got 10 percent while Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Denise Langford Morris got 7 percent. Attorney Bob Roddis got 2 percent. The EPIC-MRA poll was conducted Saturday through Tuesday and surveyed 600 likely voters statewide. It was commissioned by the Detroit Free Press and TV stations WXYZ, WJRT, WOOD and WILX. It had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

STATEWIDE OFFICES-POLL

Poll: Republicans ahead in statewide Mich. races

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - A new poll shows Republicans ahead in the races to become Michigan's next attorney general and secretary of state. A poll released Thursday by EPIC-MRA surveyed 600 likely voters from Saturday through Tuesday for the Detroit Free Press and TV stations WXYZ, WJRT, WOOD and WILX. It had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points. Republican Bill Schuette led Democrat David Leyton in the attorney general poll, 47 percent to 37 percent. Five percent of respondents supported another candidate and 11 percent were undecided. The secretary of state poll showed Republican Ruth Johnson at 44 percent and Democrat Jocelyn Benson at 36 percent. Six percent supported a different candidate with 14 percent undecided.

Snyder leads Bernero in latest Mich. poll

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - A new poll shows Republican Rick Snyder leading Democrat Virg Bernero 55 percent to 37 percent with just days to go in the Michigan governor's race. The EPIC-MRA poll was conducted Saturday through Tuesday and surveyed 600 likely voters statewide. Four percent of voters said they backed a third-party candidate, while another 4 percent were undecided. In an Oct. 3-7 EPIC-MRA poll, Snyder was ahead 49 percent to 29 percent, with 18 percent undecided. Both polls were commissioned by the Detroit Free Press and TV stations WXYZ, WJRT, WOOD and WILX and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points. VOTER TURNOUT-MICHIGAN

Land predicts Mich. voter turnout about 52 percent

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land estimates about 3.8 million voters across the state will turn out for Tuesday's election. That's 52 percent of Michigan's 7.3 million registered voters and similar to the turnout in the 2006 gubernatorial election. Detroit Clerk Janice Winfrey on Thursday estimated turnout at 25 to 30 percent of the city's 562,000 registered voters. She based her estimate on turnout in previous midterm elections. Voters on Tuesday will decide races including governor, attorney general, secretary of state, the state Legislature and the Michigan Supreme Court along with many local issues. About 5 million Michigan voters participated in the 2008 presidential election, or about 68 percent of registered voters.

ATTORNEY GENERAL-PATTERSON AD

Oakland Co. exec. takes aim at Leyton in AG's race

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson is taking aim at Democratic candidate for state attorney general David Leyton in a new TV ad that criticizes the Genesee County prosecutor's use of plea agreements. Patterson is a Republican who's a former county prosecutor himself. He says in the ad that "plea bargaining rewards the criminal and insults the victim." Patterson says Leyton is to blame for high crime in the Flint area. Republican candidate Bill Schuette's campaign is paying for the ad. Leyton spokesman Todd Cook says the ad is an example of "one career politician protecting another" and trying to make up for Schuette's lack of experience as a prosecutor. He says Leyton is a strong advocate for victims' rights.

DETROIT HIT MAN

Killer-for-hire in prison for decades gets lawyer

DETROIT (AP) - A Detroit hit man who pleaded guilty to killing eight people has been granted a lawyer to explore possible appeals. Mitch Foster says he was recently appointed after Vincent Smothers requested an appellate lawyer. Foster says he doesn't know yet if the 29-year-old Smothers has grounds for an appeal or any reason to try to withdraw his guilty pleas in Wayne County Circuit Court. Smothers is serving at least 52 years in prison for a series of mostly drug-related homicides. He pleaded guilty in June, saying he was a killer-for-hire. Separately, Smothers told police he was involved in four other killings at a Detroit drug house in 2007. He hasn't been charged.
