Guam - It seems veterans will have the authorization to receive prescription for medicinal marijuana if the bill becomes law. Senator Rory Respicio who the author of Bill 423 is, which proposes to establish medicinal cannabis programs on Guam, has received confirmation from the Veterans Health Administration. The confirmation follows the implementation of a new VA policy that states veterans will not be denied VA services on the basis of their participation in the programs.

Senator Respicio wrote, "This is great news for our veterans. I've heard and read the horror stories from these brave men and women who suffer from the side effects of the medication they've been prescribed, some as extreme as death, as recently reported. Our veterans have served our country and made the same sacrifices as their mainland counterparts. It's only right they receive the same benefits. It's imperative that Guam continue to fight for equal treatment as American citizens and this is one great step in that direction."

Guam VA Clinic director Dr. James Hastings also responded to Respicio that the VA will do everything possible to ensure veterans receive the best health care possible. The Compassionate Health Care Act of 2010 would authorize licensed physicians to recommend the use of marijuana for debilitating medical conditions, as well as provide the framework of rules and regulations for the dispensaries that would be legally authorized and approved to dispense the drug.

Yet we continue to hear that marihuana is illegal Federally?

Is there any any wonder that the medical marihuana community is seeking guidance

With this policy the Federal government is definitely taking a step in the right direction. However, the Fed's stubborn refusal to enact laws recognizing medical marijuana will continue to lead to inconsistent and absurd results. Basically the Feds are saying: "we will allow veterans to get VA benefits even if they use medical marijuana, however, we reserve the right to throw them in jail for using medical marijuana." A bit ridiculous?
