HAZEL PARK – A Hazel Park teen was robbed and shot to death in front of his house after police say he arranged to meet someone there through Craigslist to buy a cell phone.

Police identified the victim as Jonathan Celements, 19, and said he was shot in the upper torso with a .380-caliber handgun.

Police went to the scene in the 23000 block of Crossley after receiving a 911 call from someone reporting a young man lying on the ground and moaning about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Celements later died at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak.

Police said they have no suspects and no description of the shooter.

“We’re assuming it’s a male suspect,” said Hazel Park Police Lt. Michael Kolp. “The victim was unable to talk to us before he died.”

Kolp said police are checking the victim’s cell phone and computer for possible leads.

Kolp said the victim lived with relatives and was overheard giving someone directions to the house shortly before the shooting.

“The victim was also phoning and texting with the person he was arranging to meet before the shooting,” Kolp said.

No suspect vehicle was seen and police are seeking tips in the killing.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Hazel Park Police at (248) 542-6161 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAKUP.

Alexander D. Lyons of Detroit is charged with killing a Hazel Park teen through a Craigslist ad.

HAZEL PARK – Two Detroit men are now charged in the killing of a Hazel Park teen over $95 police say he was going to pay one of the suspects for a cell phone in a Craigslist deal.

“It’s our belief (the suspects) never intended on a transaction taking place and (were) doing a robbery,” said Hazel Park Police Chief David Niedermeier. “This was a senseless crime.”

Alexander D. Lyons, 23, was arraigned Friday evening before Hazel Park 43rd District Magistrate James Patterson on charges of homicide/felony murder and possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He was jailed without bond.

A second man, 19-year-old Lamar DeAngelo Clemons, was arraigned Saturday on a felony murder charge before 43rd District Court Magistrate Patrick Brennan. Clemons was ordered held in lieu of $2 million bond, said Lt. Michael Kolp of the Hazel Park Police.

Lyons and Clemons are charged in the slaying of Jonathan Clements, 19, who was fatally shot and robbed in front of his aunt’s house Tuesday in the 23000 block of Crossley. Police said Clements was killed when he went outside to buy a cell phone from Lyons. Police contend Clemons drove Lyons to the meeting.

Clements had put an ad on the free online Craigslist website saying he wanted to buy a popular Android cell phone and was later contacted by the suspect, police said.

Lyons is accused of shooting Clements and leaving him to bleed in a snow pile as he and Clemons drove away. Clements, who was shot in the side of his upper chest with a .380-caliber slug, later died at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak.

Clements lived with his aunt, Renee Bommarito, and her two small children, doing odd jobs and babysitting. He was a 2010 Romeo High School graduate and until five months ago lived in Washington Township in Macomb County.

Bommarito showed up at the Hazel Park Police station with friends on Friday as Niedermeier announced Lyons had been charged with her nephew’s murder.

“I’m mad he gets to be alive and my nephew is dead,” Bommarito said. “He thought $95 was more important than a human life … he needs to lose what I lost, and that’s a life.” Continued...

Police said they had Lyons in custody within 24 hours of the fatal shooting after doing surveillance and executing search warrants. Investigators tracked Lyons down using computer information, Niedermeier said.

“The same technology that led the killer to the victim led us to the killer,” he said.

Clements had phone and text conversations with the suspect in the hours before he was shot, police said, and the suspect told him he was lost. The two were originally supposed to meet at a gas station on Nine Mile Road. However, police said they believe Clements’ killer may have pretended to be lost because he wanted to avoid the gas station, which is well lit and on a busy road.

Clements’ funeral arrangements are being handled by the Roth-Muir Funeral Home in Romeo with visitation from 3-9 p.m. Sunday. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday at Stoney Creek Community Church in Washington Township.
