Authorities say fire at medical marijuana growing facility was arson

Police are investigating a fire that broke out early this morning at a medical marijuana growing facility in Summit Township.

Michigan State Police Fire Investigator Sgt. Ken Hersha said it appears someone forced their way into the building, 231 W. South St., about midnight Thursday and set fires in multiple locations inside the warehouse.

Hersha said authorities halted operations at the facility on Wednesday or Thursday this week, though it is unclear why.

Summit Township Fire Department Capt. Doug Evert said the structure was saved, but nearly everything inside the building was destroyed. Evert described the damaged contents as "office-type furniture".

Officers from the Blackman-Leoni Township Department of Public Safety and firefighters from the Jackson Fire Department responded as well.

Firefighters were on the scene for two hours, until about 2:30 a.m., when they cleared the building.

There were no injuries reported.

Evert said a wide-open door firefighters found upon arrival at the warehouse was the first indication that the fire was suspicious.

An investigation is ongoing.
