(WOOD) - The City of Grand Rapids is one step closer to adopting rules regulating the distribution of medical marijuana. Commissioners will vote June 22 on a measure making medical marijuana providers a home-based business, allowing them to operate in residential neighborhoods. The classification requires city inspectors from various department to sign off before the businesses can operate. The same rules apply to any business using chemical compounds, flammables and other items that could have an adverse effect on a residential area. "When you're opening your home to the public, it creates a whole new dynamic for your home," said Grand Rapids City Clerk Lauri Parks, answering the question of whether the city should regulate something state voters mandated. Michigan voters approved the measure allowing medical marijuana in November of 2008. But several communities, including Grand Rapids, have struggled over the question of regulating dispensaries. Grand Rapids officials put a moratorium on the businesses while they figured out how to deal with the matter. That moratorium expires in July.
