Rhode Island Law

I was just doing a little googling on the RI law since I here it quoted as our model on many discussions. It doesn't appear all is going well.

Here is a quote and link to an article at the time they were considering making changes.

Too many patients have no way of obtaining their medicine,” Leppanen said. “And they’re being forced to resort to unsafe measures such as buying on the street where they don’t know what they’re getting and putting themselves in dangerous circumstances in order to get their medicine.”

Proposed amendments to the existing medical marijuana statute seek to address that problem by creating up to three compassion centers where registered patients can get the plant in its various medicinal forms. The first, if the amendments are accepted, could open as early as this spring, Health Department officials said. The remaining centers could open anytime after 2010.

Here is an update of what is actually happening.

All fifteen of the applications for marijuana distribution centers submitted to the RI Health Department were rejected by officials. Nine applications did not score high enough in review and the others were disqualified for failing to comply with application rules.

IMHO, if we need to expand our law (and I think we do), we are better off doing it through another voter initiative rather than leave it up to the legislature or the MDCH.
