With DeVos money and political influence behind them the Michigan GOP is well on the way to ending free public education for K-12 in Michigan.

Apparently teaching the truth about science, politics, and society are to radical, they want to indoctrinate children in the ways of the super racist elite 'view-point' of the world.

Senate Republicans introduced today an education reform package described as a comprehensive set of proposals that will "lift the arbitrary cap on charter schools and enable parents anywhere in Michigan to pursue the education choices that work best for their children."

“Every parent in the state wants the very best for their children,” state Sen. Phil Pavlov, R-St. Clair Township, chair of the Senate Education Committee. “Unfortunately, when it comes to educating our kids, adult issues too often get in the way."

In a news release, Pavlov said two-thirds of the state’s charter schools, mostly in urban districts like Grand Rapids, Lansing, Flint and Detroit, have waiting lists as parents demand more educational choices and better results.

Groups are already sending out statements of support, including Betsy DeVos and Jim Barrett of the Great Lakes Education Project, Michigan Association of Public School Academies and The Michigan Council of Charter School Authorizers.

"The Parent Empowerment Education Reform package is about freeing parents to pursue the opportunities that work best for their children and giving schools the freedom they need to innovate and excel, ” Pavlov said.

In addition to removing the arbitrary cap on university-authorized charter schools, reforms in the legislative package would:

-Expand opportunities for cyber charter schools in Michigan;

-Allow a majority of parents or teachers at a school to petition their district to convert the school to a charter;

-Expand dual enrollment opportunities for high-achieving students and the ability of districts to provide services to part-time, non-public students; and

-Meet the specific request laid out by Gov. Rick Snyder in his special message to the Legislature on education to require all districts in the state to participate in the current schools of choice program.

“Governor Snyder challenged the Legislature to expand the schools of choice program, empower parents and ensure that every student has access to a quality education," Pavlov said. "This package is a major step toward meeting those goals and breaking down the barriers standing between our kids and their future.”

Besides Pavlov, the seven bill package is sponsored by Sens. Patrick Colbeck, R-Canton; Judy Emmons, R-Sheridan; Goeff Hansen, R-Hart; and Dave Robertson, R-Grand Blanc. The bills, 618 through 624 are currently not available on Michigan Legislature.

You know how to make schools better, proper funding!! They expect teachers to work miracles with little to no planning materials and programs. Teachers spend upwards of 500.00 dollars a year out of there own pocket for there under funded classrooms. Of course the rich don't want to fund public schools, they send there kids to private schools. So when a Republican tells you he has a plan for better public schools go ahead and laugh in their face.

October 4, 2006 You Don'Know Dick interview gives an interesting insight to whats happening now in Michigan. It helps to understand how the ultimate goal is a voucher system for education. King DeVos controls the Michigan GOP. By the way his brother-in-law owns Blackwater, a company that supplies mercenaries to the U.S. government, with the company's hired guns sent to Iraq, Afghanistan and even New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina.

According to a recent article in The Virginia Pilot, Blackwater has "won $505 million in publicly recorded federal contracts since 2000. ..." About two-thirds of that was in no-bid contracts.(This was written in 2006)

If you research the supporters of all these attacks you'll find that they received large donations from the Michigan GOP and are obligated to represent their ideas and not the law.

Regards and peace,

Thank you for this post. I worked at Central in Flint-which is closed now. The kids that could "qualify" to get into the Academys and charter schools went there while the rest of us dealt with sickening conditions.-literally. Not only did we spend our own money but we had to jump into fights in order to prevent all-out brawls. I think I had three pairs of glasses broken and I was actually knocked out once. These kids deserve better or the murder rates will just keep going up.

im all for charter schools. current delapidation of our standarized education system leaves SO MANY children behind. My daughter is one of those. She is a very very bright child in many aspects, but she also falls behind in many of the social situations one experiences thru the public school system. I opted for a charter school for a few yrs, as it was the best option for her to gain the education she needed, as the public system, with its 1 teacher to 25 children ratio, only left her further and further behind. now, at 19 (tomorrow infact) she is in her Senior yr, again back in the public school system, and is doing much better, both academically and socially.

Charter Schools Can work for those that truely need the option. For those that dont, Public or Private schools fill the need. the largest differance in the politics of education is what is the finale status quo agenda of the polical policy makers. It is my beleif, that those that continue to degrade the public school system of proper funding, are doing it with the mindset, I dont want EVERYONE educated well, just my children. Everyone elses child only needs to serve me and my childrens needs for the future, so they really do not need to be educated. Sounds like the Top 5% mentality to me, or should I say, the Republican Elitest standard.

as a result, many less Wealthy are missled as to WHY our public schools are failing, and are left with the task of trying to fix it, but they cant even figure out why it became broken (as most just wont believe the wealthy elite could willing do this to the US Citizens). So they do what a good American can do, and say, "LOOK at how Broken the public school system is, We must make charter schools (ie, task oriented education) the newest way.

now lets not make the mistake to think Charter Schools are the solution to the broken public school system. it is not. Infact I contend it will be the starting point that will truely start the evelution of America into the Service Industry Society, the Rich and Elite want us, by us, i am referring to anyone that isnt in the top 5% of Wealth Holders in the USA, to be. They need Servants to do their teadeous tasks, suck as growing food, cleaning toilets and the like. If we(again us that are not in the top 5%) have a REAL Education, which is what the original intent of the public school system was to become, then we will Know and Fully Understand the Oppression they have us In, and we may stand up and Rebel against the notion, only the Top 5% have the RIGHT to enjoy the finer things of life. I reject this notion in its entireity, and point to many brillient minds that were born into poverty, or low income households. Washing Carver for one. Nikoli Tesla is another.

Charter School, just like Trade Schools, can play a large and Positive roll in the education of many Americans, not just our children, but not every American either. But to think they will/should Replace the Public School System, or Junior Colleges, or even State Colleges is fundamentally enslavement of anyone that can not pay the cost of admission to a private education facility.
