Staff report

A Bristol man charged with hunting while smoking marijuana in a state wildlife area on the opening day of turkey hunting season could face prison time and a fine of up to $2,000.

Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection police officers on Wednesday arrested Raymond Lass, 22, of Bristol, in the Aldo Leopold Wildlife Management Area in Southbury.

After a vehicle was spotted parked on private land, a DEEP spokesman said.

Lass was found on state land hunting from a popup blind. As officers approached, authorities reported, they smelled what they suspected to be a strong odor of burning marijuana.

The officers observed the uspect smoking what appeared to be a marijuana cigarette, DEEP said; they seized a quantity of suspected marijuana and conducted a field sobriety test on Lass, which he allegedly failed.

Lass was charged with hunting under the influence of alcohol or drugs and possession of marijuana.

Lass did have a hunting license and the necessary permits to turkey hunt, DEEP said in a press release.
