GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - It appears Grand Rapids voters will get to decide whether marijuana possession will become a civil instead of a criminal infraction in the city.

Members of Decriminalize Grand Rapids have collected more than 6,000 signatures to put the question on the Nov. 6 ballot.

If approved by voters, the measure would make marijuana possession more like a parking ticket, as opposed to something that could get someone thrown in jail.

Jack Hoffman, the attorney representing Decriminalize Grand Rapids, says voter approval would help young people avoid problems in the future by preventing marijuana possession from giving them a criminal record.

Hoffman said the proposed Grand Rapids ordinance is modeled after Ann Arbor's 38-year-old ordinance, with the exception that the local law would not decriminalize the sale of marijuana.

Grand Rapids city commissioners approved the ballot question Tuesday morning as a formality since the ballot language was OK'd by the city clerk.

At least one commissioner said he won't support it at the polls.

"Clearly, I'm a 'yes' vote today. Come November, I'm a 'no' vote," said First Ward Commissioner Walt Gutowski.
