BENZIE CO. -- A petition to make marijuana legal in the city of Frankfort has collected enough signatures for the upcoming November election.

Kim Kidder, Frankfort City Clerk, confirmed that the signatures are valid and the issue is now up to voters.

If passed, it would allow adults 21-years or older to possess 1-ounce or less of cannabis on private property within city limits.

The backer of the petition is Reverend Steven B. Thompson. He thinks that the illegality of marijuana now takes away from people's civil rights.

Rev. Thompson sees no harm in using something natural, as his view is:  "We do not manufacture a drug. We grow a plant."

A similar petition will be on the ballot in Presque Isle County in the city of Onway and also in Oakland County in the cities of Oak Park and Hazel Park.

Frankfort residents will be voting on this petition on November 4th.
