The “new drug kingpins” are now mostly law-abiding investors. They prefer lawsuits to bullets, but the multi-million-dollar battles remain fierce.

An example is playing out Menominee, a city of about 8,300 located along the northwestern shores of Lake Michigan in the Upper Peninsula, where claims of questionable ethics, backroom dealings, and conflicts of interest abound. 

In the Menominee marijuana market, there is fierce competition among at least eight businesses. Although it may not appear lucrative at first glance, this market is valued at tens of millions, as stated in a federal lawsuit filed on August 21st.

What makes it so valuable?

The answer lies in the fact that Menominee is situated on the border of Wisconsin, a state that does not permit the retail sale of recreational marijuana.

In fact, it is unlikely that Wisconsin will allow such sales for several years. As a result, the Menominee businesses are enjoying a booming over-the-border trade.
