Cannabis regulator takes too long to crack down on businesses

A state audit found that Michigan’s marijuana regulator, the CRA, takes up to two years to discipline businesses that have violated state regulations. The audit recommends that the CRA speed up its processes to protect consumers and reduce future violations.

The CRA says it has made improvements to the complaint process and prioritizes complaints that impact consumer safety. However, the audit found that the agency took an average of 196 days to discipline businesses, with some cases taking up to 757 days.

The audit evaluated 678 complaints between April 1, 2021, and Sept. 30, 2022. The complaints pertained to a wide range of activities, including production, sales, operations, and security.
