Speed Controller

Anyone know anything about speed controllers?

 

I have a 400 CFM fan that doesn't need to be pulling at 400 CFM.

 

But, I am not sure if my fan is able handle a speed controller. I don't want to burn out the motor.

The controller will work with all of your fans.

Ok, just wanted to make sure.

 

My electrician said that it may blow the motor on the fan depending on what kind it is or something like that.

speed controllers are nice and they are efficient as well......... but you are right.... they can reduce the life of your fan.

 

depending on your set-up, filters, CO2, and all that, you may want to look into a timer instead..... if thats a possibility. sometimes its not.

The reason I need a speed controller is because 440cfm is not needed. The room is not big enough to warrant 440cfm.

then either a smaller fan, or a 5min on 5 min off timer??

 

or whatever times you need. could be 20 mins off...... let your rom heat up pretty good......... and then BOOM, 5 mins on the timer, 440cfm, and the entire room is cleared.

 

it wont work in all applications..... i just wanted to throw it out there for you.

The room is exhausting through the hood cooling the light at the same time.

 

Would rather have it running all the time just at a lower speed.

Go to Harbor Freight on Grosbeck south of 15 Mile road. You can by a "router controller" there for under 20 bucks. Your fan just plugs into it and it has a dial you can use to adjust your fan speed. It works perfectly for your application.

I run a 590cfm inline on a speed controller - it pulls the air from two aircooled lights as well as from the room. I find that the room is dialed in with the fan on low. On hotter days, I turn it up to medium.

 

It is true that some motors do not like speed control - I believe those have 'brushless' motors (if you don't know, you just look for a fan that specifies that speed control can be used).
