Mercury rising: 99-degree weather possible this week in West, Mid-Michigan

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Get ready to sweat it out, Michigan.

Much of lower Michigan could be in the hot seat this week, if temperatures warm up to the mid- and even upper-90s as expected, according to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids.

Meteorologist Nathan Jeruzal said the toasty weather could blow in Thursday if southerly winds prevail over inland gusts off Lake Michigan, as currently predicted by the weather service's computers.

"I wouldn’t say it’s likely at this time, but we are expecting temperatures to rise," Jeruzal said.

Still, he added, "I would say mid-90 is a good bet."

The weather service is currently predicting sunny, comfortably warm weather in the low 70s to low 80s for the first half of the week.

But dry conditions are actually creating a disadvantage for West and Mid-Michiganders, Jeruzal said, because of a lack of substantial rainfall throughout the region, even after last week's sudden downpour.

Southern Kent County and below have seen a dearth of precipitation in recent weeks, Jeruzal said, and that could help hot temperatures get even hotter by Thursday if a southerly wind pattern wins out.

"The soil’s very dry, and that helps things heat up," Jeruzal said.

The caveat, Jeruzal said, is lakeshore temperatures are likely to be less steamy than inland temps. Typically, an arc from Holland to Big Rapids around Grand Rapids will see cooler temperatures if southwesterly winds prevail, Jeruzal said.

Across the lake in Wisconsin, temperatures on Thursday are liable to heat up to 100 or more, Jeruzal said.

And back over here, wide swath stretching from Kalamazoo to Grand Rapids to Lansing, and even south to Jackson, could be in for some heat, he said.

"It would be possible we could see upper 90s around here, if things go just right," Jeruzal said.
