In 2010, there were 853,839 marijuana arrests in the United States, almost 90 percent for simple possession. At a time when state and local governments are laying off police, firefighters and teachers, this country continues to spend enormous public resources criminalizing Americans who prefer marijuana to martinis. The end result of this ongoing culture war is not necessarily lower rates of use. The U.S. has higher rates of marijuana use than the Netherlands, where marijuana is legally available. Decriminalization is a long overdue step in the right direction. Taxing and regulating marijuana would render the drug war obsolete. As long as organized crime controls distribution, marijuana consumers will come into contact with sellers of hard drugs like methamphetamine, cocaine and heroin. This "gateway" is a direct result of marijuana prohibition. Robert Sharpe, MPA Policy analyst, Common Sense for Drug Policy Washington, D.C. solabeirtan
The drug war is largely a war on marijuana smokers. A Fairly naive claim. Its actually a major part of our foreign policy, even. Imagine: A war on drugs and we are the biggest consumers. A war on terror and we are the main perps. The war on poverty. Oh yeah, Reagun ended that one, albeit a little prematurely claiming that the poor had lost that war! The war on communism and have you seen the NDAA passed by our Comerade in Chief. How about The war on high wages? the war on Voter Rights? Consumer rights... What do we call this: the Misinformation War. How about a war on Wars ? The Digital Nomad
I would still like people to consider marijuana as medicine, and not as recreational use. I guess there will be two fights for marijuana - one for medicine, the other for recreational use. This is not a point of law, but a point of ethics. I would like to see marijuana respected as medicine. No other drug I know of have the dual use - recreation and medicine, thus it is unique
