'marijuana Candy' Seized (Nebraska)

Recommended Posts

LINCOLN, Neb. —What looks to be candy is laced with medical marijuana, and it is causing a scare after deputies found it in a Colorado woman’s car.

Jessica Baker, 30, was stopped by Lancaster County deputies on Interstate 80 Wednesday. Police said she had 758 grams of marijuana candy along with other forms of marijuana in her car.

The so-called candy contains cannabis oil, extracted from marijuana plants.

Sheriff Terry Wagner said he is concerned about seeing marijuana packaged this way.

“Candy cigarettes came under fire for making it attractive for children. I would suspect this will be the same kind of outrage. Hopefully the same kind of outrage of marijuana made to look like or made into candy,” Wagner said.

According the Cheeba Chews’ website, its product has been legally produced in Colorado since 2009 for medical purposes.

The owner of the Cheeba Chews responded to KETV NewsWatch 7 in an email saying, “We do not target young people. There is not one documented sale to a minor from a dispensary in Colorado, not one. Cheeba Chews are not candy. Comparing Cheeba Chews to candy is like comparing NyQuil to Kool-Aid.”

The company also sent a copy of the warning label on their product.

Law officers are concerned it's hard to tell that the item contains a substance illegal in Nebraska and most other states.

“That raises concern because we might not be able to detect it or every item that looks like that will come under suspicion,” Wagner said.

Lincoln narcotics officers said they have come across marijuana candy in the past, but not very often.

Cheeba Chews does not sell their product online or to individuals -- only to distributors.
