Hancock Marijuana Ordinance

Michigan's northernmost city is putting its foot down when it comes to marijuana dispensaries within its borders.

The Hancock City Council voted to adopt an ordinance to regulate the dispensing of controlled substances.

The ordinance states that no person who is not a practitioner as defined by the state of Michigan can dispense, sell, or distribute controlled substances to another person on or within 1,000 feet of school property, or 500 feet of church property.

Councilman Ted Belej summed up what the purpose of this move was -- eliminating the possibility of a dispensary opening up.

Violations are punishable with a fine of up to $100 and up to 90 days in jail.

A state report from June 2011 says there are 300 registered qualifying patients in Houghton County.

Out of those 300 patients, 128 named a primary caregiver that also resides in Houghton County

2ndly, they can not impose fines or penalties above and beyond what the Act itself does....

 

I would be pointing out how much tax payers monies were just wasted makeing an ordenance, that is more restrictive than a law an the Mi Books. Hit hard the amount of loss this is for the community. They simply can not make a law that supercedes state law.

simple terms, local ordanacies can't trump state laws. we went thru this in our township.
