Rising Outrage As Obama Signs ‘Monsanto Protection Act’ Into Law

Anger is growing against President Barack Obama the day after he signed into law a spending bill that included a provision opponents have dubbed the “Monsanto Protection Act.”

That bill, the HR 933 continuing resolution, was mainly aimed at averting a government shutdown and ensuring that the federal government would continue to be able to pay its bills for the next six months.

But food and public safety advocates and independent farmers are furious that Obama signed it despite its inclusion of language that they consider to be a gift to Monsanto Company and other firms that produce genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or genetically engineered (GE) seeds and crops.

And protesters have spent the past couple of days demonstrating in front of the White House, first calling on Obama to veto the bill, and now criticizing him for his failure to do so.

The protests come on the heels of a massive petition campaign organized by the advocacy group Food Democracy Now, which gathered the signatures of more than 200,000 people who wanted Obama to veto HR 933 in order to stop Section 735 — the so-called “Monsanto Protection Act” — from being codified into law.

But Obama ignored it, instead choosing to sign a bill that effectively bars federal courts from being able to halt the sale or planting of GMO or GE crops and seeds, no matter what health consequences from the consumption of these products may come to light in the future.

“This provision is simply an industry ploy to continue to sell genetically engineered seeds even when a court of law has found they were approved by USDA illegally,” the petition stated. “It is unnecessary and an unprecedented attack on U.S. judicial review. Congress should not be meddling with the judicial review process based solely on the special interest of a handful of companies.”

Many food safety advocates maintain that there have not been enough studies into the potential health risks of GMO and GE seeds and crops, and the judicial power to stop companies from selling or planting them was one key recourse they were relying on to stop them from being sold if health risks come to light.

But the “Monsanto Protection Act” — referred to as the “Farmer Assurance Provision” by its supporters — removes that course of action, and those who are angry at Obama for signing the bill are also incensed with Sen. Barbara Mikulski, D- Md., who is accused of failing to give the amendment that inserted the language a proper hearing.

In this hidden backroom deal, Sen. Mikulski turned her back on consumer, environmental and farmer protection in favor of corporate welfare for biotech companies such as Monsanto,” Andrew Kimbrell, executive director of the Center for Food Safetysaid in a statement. “This abuse of power is not the kind of leadership the public has come to expect from Sen. Mikulski or the Democrat Majority in the Senate.”

A number of the provision’s vocal opponents allege that it was quietly inserted while the bill was still in the Senate Appropriations Committee, which Mikulski chairs, and that her committee did not hold any hearings on its language. They say many Democratic members who voted for the bill were unaware. source – IBTimes

While we bicker about the sequester and gun control King Obama signs away our food supply to Monsato and their cronies! Where is the outrage?

While the Boston Bombing occurred congress was quick to sign away our internet rights through CISPA! Where is the outrage?

Just like Rahm Emmanuel said, "You never let a serious crisis go to waste. And what I mean by that it's an opportunity to do things you think you could not do before."

Monsanto Protection Act put GM companies above the federal courts

Campaigners say that not even the US government can now stop the sale, planting, harvest or distribution of any GM seed

Top senator apologizes for 'Monsanto Protection Act' after public outrage

The blowback caused by a new law that lets biotech companies like Monsanto escape litigation is so tremendous that a senior senator from Maryland has offered the public an apology.

Included in the bill is a rider, Section 735, which says federal courts cannot intervene and halt biotech companies from planting and selling GMO goods to the public, even if testing proves them to be potentially hazardous to the greater public

They are already suing people for using seed soybeans if it has even a trace of their GMO stock in it. And winning...

I am going to buy all the Heirloom seeds I can find. This will not be the end of this takeover of the food supply.

I think GMOing our food is crazy and irresponsible and pretty soon they will have ruined our intire food supply, from the land to the sea. There is Cancer everywhere. If you look into the process of how they get the new genes into the organisms, you can see how it could cause cancer. I'd say that this is one of the most important issues of our time of the most, if not the most important. What will my grandchildren eat? idk

On a personal level I certainly agree with your list... but I also believe that since our government officials can be bought, that fact has an effect upon all of the items given in the list, all the way from 'well adjusted kids' to 'good health'.

The Monsanto company 'bought' that legislation... and it will have an effect upon us, AND future generations.

Fair enough. Who exactly did they 'buy this legislation' from?  Who else sells legislatures, congressmen, senators and such. The Republic. via its administration. So Monsanto is a business. The business of privatizing / monopolizing natural genetics of the Plantae Kingdom for monetary reasons, doesn't seem to be in the best interests of any but that small circle. Certainly not good for US, the Plantae Kingdom, or Life in general.  Where do we lay the blame? It would qualify as a conspiracy, however since we appointed our government, and since the power of a Republic is vested in the government by our vote.  Who is not doing there job? Remember too, WE voted for them.

Yep! We have met the enemy, and the enemy is 'us'.

Don't forget to vote!

Right! ok ... back to the Op...

We are not alone, on this. Depending which side you put Monsanto on. This is actually one of the on going issues with the NEW administration of Pena 'Enculo'...

trust me this statement is SPECIFICALLY TARGETTED AT MONSANTO:

just say no to Mosantogallery_2767_621_4139.jpg

English translation of sign says:

Transgenic Corn in the Country is Treason

Environmentalists protest in the Senate MEXICO CITY, April 25 (EFE). - A group of activists from Greenpeace broke today in the Mexican Senate to demand legislative reform to prohibit the planting of transgenic corn in Mexico. A managed environmental evade the security control of the legislative body and slowly descended a rope tied from a third floor inside the Plenary Hall, taking by surprise those who were there. The young unfurled a banner reading: "Transgenic Maize, treason "while another companion did the same from the floor with one that read:" The Motherland is first. " In a statement, the group said the protest ecological aimed to denounce the senators to evade "responsibility to prevent the planting of transgenic maize "in the country and risk a staple grain for food of Mexicans.Greenpeace sued the senators to amend the Law on Biosafety of Genetically Modified Organisms "to reinstate the moratorium on planting transgenic corn Mexico "in both pilot and commercial levels. further requested inspection of GM maize imports from countries that grow it commercially and take steps to reduce the likelihood that in Mexico transgenic grain is sown without authorization. Along other NGOs, Greenpeace last March asked the Mexican president, Enrique Peña Nieto, who refused several requests for agrochemical multinationals seeking to foster the planting of GM maize commercially. Moreover, asked the National Human Rights Commission that revolved measures precautionary for the federal government to refrain from granting such permits."

If you get anything out of this. Understand: Monsantos' not just infected our Admin they have infected this other one and dont you know plan to infect a few more of them.  This might have something to do with that other pesky plague " the  Drug War "....
