Should Marijuana Be Used for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder ?

The state of Colorado allows the legal use of marijuana for treating

the symptoms of a number of diseases. However, the state does not

allow the use of medical marijuana in treating post-traumatic stress disorder.

A recent proposal to have Colorado’s Department of Health review whether

or not pot should be prescribed to treat the disorder was defeated

in the House – in fact, the health department itself was against the proposal.

The health department’s chief medical officer had this to say:

““There is no evidence of efficacy of marijuana for treatment of P.T.S.D.

in the medical literature … In fact, the published literature suggests

that such use leads to addiction and abuse of other substances.”

Meanwhile, neighboring New Mexico – a fellow medical marijuana

state – approved the use of cannabis for treating post-traumatic stress

disorder in early 2009. Today, more patients use medical marijuana to

treat post-traumatic stress disorder in New Mexico than any other condition.

IMO until cannabis is 'legalized' the opinion on WHO can use it and the 'ailments' that cannabis can be used for will be an endless tug of war with people and 'patients' being tossed here and there by the legal system.

BUT PTSD could be brought to the MDCH attention by way of petitioning to have it added as an 'ailment' that qualifies, then we would know how to further approach the problem of adding PTSD as a 'condition' IF the MDCH denies it as an addition (signatures, professional testimony, etc.).

Just my penny's worth... great post.

Peace.

The Colorado dept of health is FOS if they want to say that it is unuseful they show the proof where are the studies where is the research to back up that Bull. Would really like to see some long term studies done so they can’t keep making up BS. I volunteer to be a test subject how bout you?

Thanks " greenbuddha " , your probly right ....

I would like to see PTSD added and few other condition

added to the list .

But i just don't believe there is enough studies to

back up that Medical Marijuana helps .

Just like Medical Marijuana helps w/ Depression ...

If they added Depression to the List , 80 % of Michigan

would qualify ....

The Problem I'm seeing is that there are some people abusing

the system and it's hurting those that really need it .

my neighbor is a Vietnam vet, after the war he was a sheriff for somewhere up north till he retired.

as a sheriff he was against marijuana at first, but eventually someone talked him into using it for his PTSD.

according to him and his wife, it stopped the violent nightmares, and relieved the jumpy uneasiness he constantly had. that feeling of still being trapped in the jungle and being on edge for then enemy finally went away. he was able to lower his stress level a lot. which can obviously give many health benefits and increased lifespan.

he has been self medicating for over 30 years now and claims it works wonders.

I have family in CO and I have gotten to meet the people that live between 7-9,000 ft elevation <geez>

Colorado would be a great **test** state for Vets and PTSD.

The culture seems a bit more explosive and if the Colorado Schools Shootings are any indication of home/family stress levels, I believe medical marijuana would be a great test.
